Key takeaways
- CMA stands for Cost and Management Accountant when ICMAI awards it in India, and Certified Management Accountant when the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) awards it in the USA.
- The body’s name is your quickest check. ICMAI’s legal name says “Cost Accountants” but its title is “Cost and Management Accountant”, while IMA’s word is “Certified”.
For CMA India, ICMAI lists Class 10 and 10+2 as routes into Foundation. When you can sit the Foundation exam is covered in our CMA eligibility guide. For the CMA USA, IMA asks for a bachelor’s degree or a related professional certification, two years of experience, active IMA membership and passing both exam parts.
- In banking, CMA means Credit Monitoring Arrangement, a term in a Reserve Bank of India document. It is not a qualification.

Search “CMA” and you will find three different answers. Two are professional qualifications from different bodies, and one is a banking term. For a Class 12 or Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) student, mixing them up is more than a trivia error: the entry rules, stages and route that apply to one do not apply to the other.
This page sorts it out. You get both expansions, a quick way to tell the credentials apart on any website or job advert, and our own recommendation for choosing a route. Each fact is credited to the body that publishes it.
What is the CMA full form in India and in the USA?
In India, CMA stands for Cost and Management Accountant, a title awarded by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). In the USA, CMA stands for Certified Management Accountant, awarded by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). Different bodies award them, so they are separate credentials.
CMA India: Cost and Management Accountant (ICMAI)
The ICMAI full form is Institute of Cost Accountants of India. ICMAI's history page calls "Cost and Management Accountants (CMAs)" its professional designation. The International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) member page for the institute uses the same title. So the full form of CMA in India is Cost and Management Accountant.
CMA USA: Certified Management Accountant (IMA)
The IMA full form is Institute of Management Accountants. IMA's certification page states the CMA USA full form as "Certified Management Accountant".
How does the CMA India route work from Foundation to Final?
CMA India has three stages run by ICMAI: Foundation, Intermediate and Final. ICMAI's curriculum pages list all three. Parliament set the institute up by a special Act on 28 May 1959, according to ICMAI's history page.
The same page describes the institute as having approximately 6,00,000+ students and 1,00,000+ qualified professionals all over the globe.
As of November 2026, ICMAI's eligibility page lists passing Class 10 or equivalent, or the Senior Secondary School Examination under the 10+2 scheme, as routes into Foundation. For Intermediate it lists 10+2 plus the Foundation course, or a university degree in most subjects, among other routes. Check that page for the current rules before you register.
ICMAI's overview page carries the line "Behind Every Successful Business Decision, There is Always a CMA". It lists practical training alongside the courses. For what a CMA does day to day, read what cost and management accountants do. For paper-level detail, see the CMA Intermediate syllabus.

How does the CMA USA route work, and who can earn it?
IMA awards the CMA to people who pass Parts 1 and 2 of its exam and meet its education and experience rules. As of November 2026, IMA's how-to page sets out three requirements:
- Education: a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, or a related professional certification.
- Experience: two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management. You can complete this before, or within seven years of, passing the exam.
- Membership: active IMA membership. IMA states that only active members can earn the CMA.
IMA offers the exam in three windows a year: January/February, May/June and September/October.
How do the two CMA credentials compare at a glance?
The two credentials differ in awarding body, stages and entry route. This table uses only what ICMAI, IFAC and IMA state themselves, as of November 2026.
| Detail | CMA India | CMA USA |
|---|---|---|
| Full form | Cost and Management Accountant | Certified Management Accountant |
| Awarded by | ICMAI | IMA |
| Kind of body | A "global association at the intersection of accounting, finance, and business strategy" (IMA's own description) | |
| Stages | Foundation, Intermediate, Final | Part 1 and Part 2 |
| How you start | Class 10 or equivalent, or 10+2, into Foundation | Degree or professional certification, plus experience and IMA membership |
For cost, difficulty and career detail, read our full comparison of the two routes.
To decode any page, job advert or piece of advice that says "CMA", follow the body to the credential to the route:
Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI)
→ Cost and Management Accountant
→ Foundation → Intermediate → Final
Institute of Management Accountants (IMA)
→ Certified Management Accountant
→ Part 1 + Part 2 (degree or professional certification, experience, IMA membership)
Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
→ Credit Monitoring Arrangement
→ bank credit data, not a qualification
Ask three questions. Which body is named? Does it talk about Foundation, Intermediate and Final, or about Parts 1 and 2? Is the word before "Management Accountant" "Cost and" or "Certified"? Two matching answers tell you which CMA you are reading about.
Why do people mix up Cost and Management Accountant with Certified Management Accountant?
In commerce, CMA stands for two qualifications, and the Indian institute's name does not match its title, since the 2012 renaming. A page that gives only one expansion, or an older name, leaves readers guessing which CMA it means.
ICWAI full form and the name change
The ICWAI full form is Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India, the institute's earlier name. ICMAI's history page records that ICMAI began in 1944 as a registered company and was established by Parliament in 1959. A 2012 amendment renamed it The Institute of Cost Accountants of India. IFAC's member page also lists the former name.
The institute's own website now uses the abbreviation ICMAI. Older material still says ICWAI, so you will see both.
"Cost" vs "Certified": three terms, three meanings
- Cost Accountants is the institute's legal name, and the name of the Act.
- Cost and Management Accountant is the Indian title, the CMA full form in India.
- Certified Management Accountant is the US credential awarded by IMA.
"Management Accountant" appears in both titles, so look at the first word and the body.
Does CMA mean something else in banking?
Yes. In banking, CMA stands for Credit Monitoring Arrangement. It is not a qualification. An RBI document dated 7 October 2003 uses the wording for a credit-data format, Form A, in which banks report borrowers' credit limits and outstanding balances to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). If a bank form or banker mentions CMA, ask which bank format or document they mean before assuming it relates to a course.
Which CMA fits you, the Indian route or the US route?
Choose by what you hold today and what each body asks for. These rules are our recommendation, built only from the entry rules above.
If you are in Class 12 or have just passed it. Choose the India route if you want to start now, because Class 10 or equivalent and 10+2 are both listed routes into Foundation. The USA route asks for a bachelor's degree or related professional certification before you can earn the CMA, but IMA lets the experience be completed before or within seven years of passing the exam. So you can plan towards it during your degree instead of waiting until graduation.
If you are doing a BCom or hold a degree. Choose the India route if you want to qualify through ICMAI's three stages. ICMAI lists a university degree in most subjects as a route into Intermediate. Choose the USA route if you want IMA membership and can build experience in management accounting or financial management. If you are also weighing Company Secretary, read CS vs CMA.
If you already work in finance. Choose the USA route if your job is in management accounting or financial management. IMA lets that experience be completed before or within seven years of passing, so what you have done can count. Choose the India route if you want to be an ICMAI-trained Cost and Management Accountant.

How do you try CMA India or CMA USA coaching with us before you commit?
Whichever CMA you are reading about, settle two things before you register: which body awards it, and whether you meet that body's entry rule today. Check both on the body's own page, ICMAI's course eligibility page for the Indian route or IMA's how-to page for the US route, rather than on a coaching blog.
In the next day or two, write down what you hold today (Class 10, Class 12, a degree or a professional certification) and match it to the right entry rule. If the two do not line up, or you are still choosing between the routes, talk it through with us. iProledge coaches CMA India (Foundation, Intermediate and Final) and CMA USA, and you can see both on our courses page.
