CS vs CMA: Where Each Gets Hard and What It Costs

CS vs CMA is a choice between company law and governance, or costing and management accounting.

By Naveen J D, Founder · Updated 3 Nov 2026

A student sits at a desk by a window with two closed books and a few papers in front of them, deciding between two courses.

Key takeaways

  • Choose CS for company law, compliance and governance. Choose CMA for costing, budgeting and management accounting. Neither is the easier course.
  • As of November 2026, our coaching fees are the same at the first two levels: ₹72,000 for the Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test (CSEET) plus CS Executive, and ₹72,000 for CMA Foundation plus CMA Intermediate. Fees do not decide this choice.
  • Run a two-hour reading test on one chapter from each subject and a 14-day stamina trial before you pay for either course.

A student who enjoys the entry-level papers can still struggle two stages later, because the work gets heavier and more specialised.

That is why a salary table does not settle the question. Pay depends on the employer, the city and how many attempts you took, and none of those can be read off a course name. What you can check beforehand is whether you can study that subject for three hours a day, for over a year.

On this page, CS means Company Secretary, awarded by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). CMA means Cost and Management Accountant, awarded by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). It does not mean the US CMA. We (iProledge) coach both courses and publish this page.

CS vs CMA: which one fits a commerce student in India?

Choose CS if the work you want is company law, compliance and board-level governance. Choose CMA if you want costing, budgeting and management accounting. The two are not interchangeable, and neither is a weaker version of the other.

The CS Professional Programme under ICSI's Syllabus 2022 has seven papers in two groups, with one elective in each group, as reported by TaxGuru. The five compulsory papers are Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG): Principles and Practice; Drafting, Pleadings and Appearances; Compliance Management, Audit and Due Diligence; Strategic Management and Corporate Finance; and Corporate Restructuring, Valuation and Insolvency. That is mainly a reading-and-drafting load.

If you are weighing Chartered Accountancy (CA) as well, CA vs CS compares those two on pass rates, fees and pay.

Which stage is the real filter in CS and in CMA?

The CS Executive stage is the hardest to pass of the stages we compared. In the June 2026 session, 17.41% of candidates passed Group 1 and 22.19% passed Group 2, the lowest figures in the table below.

A candidate writes an exam at a desk in a quiet hall with empty desks behind them.
The Executive stage is where most candidates are tested hardest, so it is the point to prepare for first.

CS Professional
CMA Intermediate (Groups I and II)
CMA Final

The CMA Final figures are for candidates who sat Group III only and Group IV only. The CS percentages are as reported by TaxGuru from ICSI's press release, which says ICSI declared the CS results on 25 August 2026. The CMA percentages are as reported by Careers360. It reports that ICMAI declared both the Intermediate and Final results on 5 August 2026.

The CSEET entry test, passed by 67.59% of candidates in June 2026 as reported by TaxGuru, is much easier to clear than the stages that follow.

Our comparison of the table, as of November 2026:

  • CS Executive Group 1 is 6.52 points below CMA Intermediate Group I (23.93 minus 17.41).
  • CS Executive Group 2 is 8.45 points below CMA Intermediate Group II (30.64 minus 22.19).
  • At the final stage, CMA Final Group IV (44.21%) is 14.72 points above CS Professional Group 2 (29.49%).

Treat these with care. They come from one session, the papers differ between the courses, and a pass rate measures the candidates who sat that session, not how hard the subject is. CS Executive pass percentage and CMA pass percentage show how those stages moved across several sessions.

Our recommendation is to judge each course by its first main exam (CS Executive, CMA Intermediate), not its entry stage. Test the subject at Executive or Intermediate level, not the Class 12 version of it.

Does the coaching cost differ between CS and CMA?

As of November 2026, the first two levels cost the same at our fees. Our coaching for CSEET (₹22,000) plus CS Executive (₹50,000) comes to ₹72,000. Our coaching for CMA Foundation (₹22,000) plus CMA Intermediate (₹50,000) also comes to ₹72,000. These are our own tuition fees, added up as above.

Four things sit outside that figure:

  • ICSI and ICMAI charge their own registration and exam fees separately. See company secretary course fees in India and CMA India course fees.
  • You pay again for each repeat attempt.
  • As of November 2026, our CMA Final coaching is ₹10,000 per paper. CS Professional coaching is charged separately from the figures above.
  • Fees paid to us are not refunded, which is the practical reason to test before you enrol.

You can pay by UPI, net banking, credit or debit card, No Cost EMI (NCEMI, an instalment plan with no added interest) or a flexible payment plan.

How long is practical training for CS, and what does CMA require?

As of November 2026, ICSI requires 21 months of practical training, with a minimum stipend of ₹5,000 a month for training registered on or after 1 August 2023 (reported by TaxGuru). CS articleship stipend formulas works out the total and your finish date.

As of November 2026, students who registered for CMA Intermediate on or after 11 February 2020 must complete 15 months of practical training before the declaration of the Final result. The Skills Training programme and, for Final students, the Industry Oriented Training Programme sit alongside it.

ICMAI also sets its own classroom coaching: 4 months and at least 240 lecture hours per group, with enrolment at least four months before the exam. Plan the first attempt around that gap.

How can you test CS against CMA before paying?

Run a two-hour reading test, a 14-day stamina trial and a cost sheet, then use the decision table. The pass and fail marks are our recommendation, not an official standard.

Frequently asked questions

Neither is easier overall. CS is mostly law and drafting, CMA is mostly costing and calculation.

The course name does not decide it. Pay depends on the employer, city and stage of career. For pay data, see CMA salary in India and stats on company secretary salary, and compare it with the pay in the roles you actually want.

Both start after Class 12. CS starts with the CSEET entry test. CMA starts with Foundation, and ICMAI also lists other Foundation entry routes on its eligibility page. Choose by the subject you can study daily.

Yes for CMA. ICMAI admits graduates in most subjects directly to Intermediate, and graduates awaiting results can register provisionally, as its eligibility page lists. Check the exceptions on that page before you apply.

No. This page is about the Indian CMA from ICMAI. US CMA is a separate qualification. We coach both CMA India and CMA USA, so tell us which you mean when you call.
Yes. Run the reading test and the 14-day stamina trial on both subjects first. Fees paid to us are not refunded, so test before you enrol.
