Key takeaways
- 01The CMA pass percentage in India was 19.68% to 44.21% across Intermediate and Final groups in June 2026 and December 2025. Which figure applies depends on whether you count one group or only candidates who sat both.
- 02About two in three candidates who sat both Intermediate groups passed neither: 65.75% in December 2025 and 67.50% in June 2026 (our calculation).
- 03A group needs 40% in every paper and 50% aggregate, so one weak paper sinks the whole group however strong the others are.
- 04For US CMA, IMA states an average pass rate of about 50% for each of Parts 1 and 2 (as of October 2026, under the format used before September 2026). The 360 out of 500 pass mark is unchanged.

One result from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) for the Cost and Management Accountant (CMA) Intermediate can carry two different pass percentages, and both are correct. The difference is who is counted.
ICMAI declared the June 2026 results on 5 August 2026. Among candidates who sat both Intermediate groups together, 19.68% passed both groups. A group is one half of a level: Intermediate and Final each have two groups, and you must clear both to complete the level. A separate percentage covers everyone who sat one group, whether or not they also sat the other.
Which figure applies to you depends on how you plan to sit. This page sets out the last four sessions side by side, shows how to choose between one group and both, and gives you a check to run on your own mock marks before you register for a group.
What is the CMA pass percentage in India as of October 2026?
As of October 2026, the latest results (June 2026, declared 5 August 2026) put the Intermediate pass percentage at 23.93% for Group I, 30.64% for Group II and 19.68% for candidates who sat both. Final stood at 30.22% for Group III, 44.21% for Group IV and 32.97% for both.
Here are the last four sessions. "Both groups" means the share of candidates who sat both groups together and passed both.
| Session | Group I | Group II | Both groups |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2024 | 16.10% | 28.69% | 17.77% |
| June 2025 | 10.62% | 30.42% | 13.75% |
| December 2025 | 24.59% | 31.76% | 22.87% |
| June 2026 | 23.93% | 30.64% | 19.68% |
| Session | Group III | Group IV | Both groups |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2024 | 14.72% | 50.95% | 22.46% |
| June 2025 | 16.20% | 24.85% | 18.64% |
| December 2025 | 24.42% | 33.79% | 25.55% |
| June 2026 | 30.22% | 44.21% | 32.97% |
ICMAI publishes scorecards for each session on its results page. The figures above come from press reports of each declaration: December 2024, June 2025 (Intermediate and Final), December 2025 and June 2026.
Why does one CMA result carry two different pass percentages?
A group rate counts everyone who sat that group, including candidates who also sat the other group. The "both groups" rate counts only candidates who sat both together, and splits them three ways: passed both, passed one, or passed neither. The tables above mix these two kinds of figure, which is why they look inconsistent.
The December 2025 Intermediate counts show how they fit. 32,752 candidates sat the Intermediate exam: 29,375 sat Group I and 14,803 sat Group II. So 11,426 sat both, because 29,375 + 14,803 − 11,426 = 32,752.
Our model for the "passed neither" share: candidates who sat both = passed both ÷ the reported passed-both rate, where the sources do not state the count. Passed one = the reported count ÷ candidates who sat both. Passed neither = 100% − passed both − passed one. This is our calculation, not an official figure.
| Level and session | Sat both groups | Passed both | Passed one | Passed neither |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intermediate, December 2025 | 11,426 (reported) | 2,613 (22.87%) | 1,300 (11.38%) | 7,513 (65.75%) |
| Intermediate, June 2026 | 2,144 ÷ 19.68% ≈ 10,894 | 2,144 (19.68%) | 1,397 ÷ 10,894 = 12.82% | 100 − 19.68 − 12.82 = 67.50% |
| Final, December 2025 | 3,910 (reported) | 999 (25.55%) | 631 (16.14%) | 2,280 (58.31%) |
| Final, June 2026 | 1,430 ÷ 32.97% ≈ 4,337 | 1,430 (32.97%) | 702 ÷ 4,337 = 16.19% | 100 − 32.97 − 16.19 = 50.84% |
The percentages answer different questions, so pick the one that matches yours.
Should you sit one CMA group or both groups together?
Sit both groups together only when your mock marks already clear the passing rule in both groups. Otherwise sit one. The results do not show that sitting both lowers your chance in each group. But about two in three Intermediate candidates who sat both groups passed neither, so readiness decides the outcome, not the tactic.
We compared the pass rate per group for everyone against candidates who sat both. This is our model, built from the counts above:
- All sitters, per group = (passes in the two groups) ÷ (sitters in the two groups).
- Both-sitters, per group = (2 × passed both + passed one) ÷ (2 × sat both).
| Level and session | All sitters, per group | Both-sitters, per group |
|---|---|---|
| Intermediate, December 2025 | (7,222 + 4,702) ÷ (29,375 + 14,803) = 27.0% | (2 × 2,613 + 1,300) ÷ (2 × 11,426) = 28.6% |
| Intermediate, June 2026 | (6,813 + 5,358) ÷ (28,471 + 17,488) = 26.5% | (2 × 2,144 + 1,397) ÷ (2 × 10,894) = 26.1% |
| Final, December 2025 | (2,570 + 1,720) ÷ (10,524 + 5,091) = 27.5% | (2 × 999 + 631) ÷ (2 × 3,910) = 33.6% |
| Final, June 2026 | (3,165 + 2,384) ÷ (10,474 + 5,393) = 35.0% | (2 × 1,430 + 702) ÷ (2 × 4,337) = 41.1% |
At Intermediate the two rates are almost identical. At Final, candidates who sat both groups did better per group. Those candidates choose themselves: someone who registers for both has usually prepared every paper. We would not read the Final gap as proof that sitting both raises your odds.
Between about 65% and 73% of group attempts failed in the last two sessions (our calculation from the all-sitters column above). Two groups give you two chances to miss on a single paper. Our recommendation is to sit both when the check below passes for each group. Where it passes for only one, put your full preparation into the stronger group and sit the other in the next session.
Why does one weak paper sink a whole CMA group?
ICMAI sets two tests at once, as of October 2026, for each Intermediate and Final group: at least 40% in every paper and at least 50% aggregate across the non-exempted papers of the group (ICMAI circular on the 2022 syllabus). A strong paper lifts the aggregate but cannot rescue a paper below 40%, so a group is lost on its weakest paper.
Because every paper needs 40%, a group can fail with a 56% aggregate, as the worked example below shows.
Single sessions also swing widely, so do not plan on a trend continuing. Group IV went 50.95%, 24.85%, 33.79% and 44.21% across the four sessions in the tables. The Final both-groups rate rose from 18.64% in June 2025 to 25.55% in December 2025 and 32.97% in June 2026. The Intermediate both-groups rate went from 13.75% in June 2025 to 22.87% in December 2025, then fell to 19.68% in June 2026. Plan on your own marks.

How do you check your mock marks against the CMA passing rule?
Run four checks on your last three full-length mock tests. They use the same two tests ICMAI applies on result day, so each one is a clear pass or fail. Each paper is marked out of 100.

| Check | Pass | Fail |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Lowest paper in the group | 40 or above in every paper | Any paper below 40 |
| 2. Group aggregate: total marks ÷ number of papers | 50 or above | Below 50 |
| 3. Consistency across your last three mocks | Checks 1 and 2 pass in all three | Pass in one or two only |
| 4. Both groups | Checks 1 to 3 pass for each group | Checks 1 to 3 fail for one or both groups |
Sit only the group that passes. Our recommendation is to aim for 50 or more in every paper and 55 or more in aggregate, so a bad day on one paper still clears the line. That margin is our judgement, not an ICMAI figure.
Worked example. Four papers score 62, 55, 38 and 70. The total is 225, so the aggregate is 225 ÷ 4 = 56.25, which clears 50. But 38 is below 40, so the group fails. At 40 in that paper the total is 227 and the aggregate 56.75, and the group would pass. Our CMA mock test review sheet shows how to turn a mock score into the next step.
What is the US CMA pass percentage, and how does it differ?
IMA, the Institute of Management Accountants, states an average pass rate of about 50% for each of Parts 1 and 2 (as of October 2026, under the format used before September 2026). You need 360 out of 500 on each part. That is a per-part rate for a different exam, so it cannot be compared with ICMAI group rates.
From the September/October 2026 window, IMA replaced the two written essays with case-based questions. Content, scoring and the 360 out of 500 pass mark are unchanged, per IMA. If you are choosing between the two routes, read our guide to how tough the CMA exam is for Indian candidates. We also run CMA USA coaching in Bangalore.
How does iProledge help you choose between one CMA group and both?
We teach CMA Foundation and Intermediate, plus CMA USA, online and offline, with personal mentorship and doubt-clearing sessions. Our CMA Intermediate coaching in Bangalore runs live classes, mock tests and mentoring, which is what the check above needs: marks for every paper, repeated, with someone looking at the weakest one.

Frequently asked questions
That figure counted candidates on the older 2016 syllabus: 304 of 10,096 passed both groups. Candidates on the 2022 syllabus in the same session did far better, with 456 of 2,622 passing (17.39%).
Yes, for Intermediate and Final. Score 60% or more in a paper and fail the group, and you are exempt from that paper for the next three consecutive attempts, as of October 2026 (ICMAI circular). Foundation has no exemption.
