CS Professional Study Material for December 2026: File Check
CS Professional study material for December 2026 means ICSI's books plus supplements, with the standard Advanced Direct Tax and Goods and Services Tax electives, not June 2027 files. CS is Company Secretary.

Key takeaways
For December 2026, read ICSI's Professional book and December 2026 supplement for every paper you sit (ICSI notice). The exam applies law up to 31 May 2026. Most books are updated to that date. Elective 4.5 (31 October 2025) and Elective 7.2 (31 May 2025) reach it only through their December 2026 supplements, and both are examined on the Finance Act, 2025.
- For Elective 4.5 (Advanced Direct Tax) and Elective 7.2 (Goods and Services Tax, GST, and Corporate Tax Planning), use the standard file, not the one labelled "for June 2027 exam onwards".
- The reading load is 4,706 to 5,380 pages for books plus supplements, depending on your electives. That is 94 to 108 pages a day for one read over the 50 days from 1 November to 21 December 2026 (our count and model, shown below).
- Both electives are open book (reference material may be consulted), so their long books are for finding answers, not memorising. Coaching earns its fee on structure, doubt clearing and timed practice.

Sixteen files from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), 805 pages of December supplements (our count, shown below) and four different cut-off dates sit behind one exam session. ICSI puts every Professional book on one page, so downloading is the easy part. Choosing the right edition for your own papers is harder.
A book's cut-off date is the day up to which its law is current. It is not the day the exam applies. The supplements, short ICSI PDFs listing later changes, vary widely in size from paper to paper.
This page gives the file to use for each of the sixteen papers and electives, four checks you can run on any download, and a reading-load count with the arithmetic shown. It comes from iProledge, where we teach CS Professional in Bengaluru and online, so the last section says plainly when ICSI's books are enough and when a teacher is worth paying for.
What is the right CS Professional study material for December 2026?
For December 2026, use ICSI's Professional book for each paper you sit plus ICSI's December 2026 supplement for the same paper. ICSI's notice dated 28 July 2026 lists every book's cut-off date and tells students to read the supplements as well (ICSI, Study Material Applicable for December 2026 Examination). The exam applies law up to 31 May 2026. Most books are updated to that date. Elective 4.5 (31 October 2025) and Elective 7.2 (31 May 2025) reach it only through their December 2026 supplements, and both are examined on the Finance Act, 2025.
Professional has seven papers in two groups. Group 1 is Papers 1, 2 and 3 plus Elective 1 (Paper 4, one of six options). Group 2 is Papers 5 and 6 plus Elective 2 (Paper 7, one of five options). The table lists all sixteen files, as of 1 November 2026.

How we built it: on 1 November 2026 we opened each book and December 2026 supplement PDF on ICSI's Professional Programme and Supplements pages and counted PDF pages, covers and indexes included. Cut-off dates come from ICSI's notice, and each matched the preface of the book we opened. Elective 7.2's supplement has two parts, 14 pages on GST and 3 on Corporate Tax Planning.
Our CS Executive edition check covers the same exercise for the earlier level: CS Executive Study Material for December 2026.
Why is the newest-looking Advanced Direct Tax or GST file wrong for December 2026?
The files marked "for June 2027 exam onwards" are written on the Income Tax Act, 2025, and ICSI says that Act does not apply to the December 2026 session. ICSI's notice of 29 June 2026 states that the Finance Act, 2025, the annual law amending tax rules, applies to Elective 4.5 and Elective 7.2, and that the Income Tax Act, 2025 "will not be applicable for December 2026 session of examination" (ICSI, Applicability of Finance Act, 2025 for December 2026 Exam).
ICSI's Professional page lists two files for each of these electives:
- 4.5 Advanced Direct Tax: the standard file is 476 pages, updated to 31 October 2025. The June 2027 file is 388 pages, updated to 31 May 2026. Its preface says it is based on the Income Tax Act, 2025 as amended by the Finance Act, 2026 and is "relevant for June 2027 examination onwards".
- 7.2 GST and Corporate Tax Planning: the standard file is 734 pages, updated to 31 May 2025. The June 2027 file is 700 pages, updated to 31 May 2026. Its preface ties Part II, Corporate Tax Planning (30 of 100 marks), to the Income Tax Act, 2025.
The newer-dated file is therefore the wrong one for this session. The right standard file looks older because ICSI froze it earlier. Its December 2026 supplement carries the changes up to 31 May 2026. If you have started the June 2027 file, switch now and re-check any notes you made against the standard file and its supplement.
Papers 2 and 7.1 need no switch. Their prefaces say the study material still contains the provisions of the old Income-tax Act, 1961, for CS examination purposes, and that the 2025 Act applies from the June 2027 examination.
File names can mislead too. Paper 2's web address contains "july2023", yet its preface says legislative changes up to 31 May 2026 are included. Trust the preface, not the file name.
How do you check that a CS Professional file is the right edition?
Run four checks on every file before you print or study it. Each takes a minute and has a clear pass and fail.
Does the preface cut-off match the table?
Open the preface and find the line "legislative changes made upto". Pass: the date matches the "Book updated till" column above. Fail: any other date. For example, an Elective 4.5 book showing 31 May 2026 is the June 2027 file.
Does the label avoid "June 2027"?
Pass: the file's link on ICSI's Professional page is not one of the entries labelled "for June 2027 exam onwards". Fail: it is.
Does the supplement cover name December 2026?
Pass: the cover says "for December 2026 Examination" and its updates run to 31 May 2026. Fail: any other session. ICSI's Supplements page also keeps June 2026, December 2025 and older sessions in the same list, so download from the December 2026 heading.
Does the supplement's index match your book's contents?
Pass: every lesson number in the supplement's index exists in your book's contents page. Fail: a lesson number in the index has no match in your book. Paper 7.3's supplement, for example, lists lessons 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9, so those five lessons are where its updates sit.
The same tests apply to any outside note or guide you are tempted to use. It should cover law to 31 May 2026 and include the December 2026 supplement. A note that skips either is out of date for this session.

How many pages of CS Professional study material do you have to read?
You face between 4,706 and 5,380 pages, books plus supplements, for the five core papers and one elective in each group. We call this the reading load. It is our model from the page counts above, not an official ICSI figure.
The working:
- Core papers: books 728 + 636 + 640 + 764 + 812 = 3,580 pages. Supplements 69 + 34 + 21 + 31 + 110 = 265 pages. Together 3,845.
- Lightest electives: 4.6 IFSCA (304 + 26 = 330) and 7.5 Insolvency (432 + 99 = 531) add 861. Total 4,706.
- Heaviest electives: 4.3 Intellectual Property Rights (732 + 17 = 749) and 7.4 Banking & Insurance (764 + 22 = 786) add 1,535. Total 5,380.
- Pace: pages ÷ days left to your first paper. From 1 November 2026 to the first paper on 21 December is 50 days, so one read is 4,706 ÷ 50 ≈ 94 to 5,380 ÷ 50 ≈ 108 pages a day. The core papers alone are 3,845 ÷ 50 ≈ 77 a day. Swap in your own days left.
Two patterns stand out:
- Core supplements are heavy. At 265 pages they are 7.4% of the 3,580 core book pages. The seven CS Executive supplements for the same session were about 2% of their books (109 of 5,298 pages, in our count on that page). Professional supplements need real reading time.
- Some electives are mostly supplement. Labour Laws & Practice has a 268-page supplement against a 360-page book (74%). Insolvency & Bankruptcy has 99 pages against 432 (23%). In all, the sixteen December 2026 supplement files hold 805 pages.
The timetable shapes where those hours go. ICSI's December 2026 schedule has the papers on 21 December (ESG), 22 December (Strategic Management), 23 December (Drafting), 24 December (Corporate Restructuring), 26 December (Compliance Management), then Elective 2 on 27 December and Elective 1 on 28 December, 2:00 to 5:15 PM. The two electives are both open book: candidates may consult reference material during the paper, and ICSI's exam instructions define what is permitted.
Our recommendation: read core papers in exam order and give the electives your last reading slot. For an open book paper, spend those hours on tabbing the book and writing practice answers rather than memorising. Choose the elective for your career first, then check its load. ICSI also publishes guideline answers, the model answers to past papers, for the June 2026 and December 2025 Professional sessions on its guideline answers page. Write a past paper under timed conditions before you read the guideline answer.
When are ICSI's books enough, and when does CS Professional coaching help?
ICSI's books and supplements are the primary material, and in our view most candidates do not need a second set of notes. Coaching earns its fee when the problem is structure: a timetable you keep, someone to clear doubts, and practice under exam conditions. If your only problem was finding the right file, this page has solved it.
Coaching fits if you recognise any of these:
- Five thousand pages and 50 days is a schedule you cannot build alone.
- You read a lesson, then cannot tell what the examiner wants from it.
- You have not written a timed answer in months.
