CA vs CS: Pass Rates, Fees and Pay in India

CA vs CS comes down to the work you want. CA leads to audit, tax and finance roles, while CS leads to company law, governance and compliance roles.

Key takeaways

  1. 01
Choose CA if you want audit, tax or finance work, and CS if you want company law, board procedure and compliance work. Neither is less effort. They differ in kind.
  2. 02
Group for group in 2026, CS pass rates ran higher than CA's, but most candidates still failed CS Executive Group 1.
  3. 03
Official fees, as of October 2026, including exam fees: ₹84,500 for CA via Foundation (₹74,000 by Direct Entry) and ₹54,000 for CS via the entry test (₹50,000 if exempt from it). These are our sums from each institute's schedule.
  4. 04
ICAI's report on the 61st placement round put the average pay of placed new CAs at ₹12.86 lakh per annum. We found no ICSI-wide average for new CS.

Chartered Accountancy (CA) and Company Secretary (CS) both lead to respected careers, but they ask different things of you. In the May 2026 exams, only 12.00% of candidates passed CA Final Group 1, so neither route is a shortcut.

CA, awarded by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), trains you in audit, tax and financial reporting. CS, awarded by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), trains you in company law, securities rules and board procedure.

This page compares the two on pass rates, official fees, training and pay, using each institute's own published figures wherever they exist. Where we have done the sums ourselves, we say so and show the working.

It ends with five short tests that tell you which route fits you, and you can run all of them this week before you pay a single registration fee. You should leave this page knowing which route to choose, or exactly what is still missing from your decision.

CA vs CS: which one should you choose?

Choose CA if you want to work with accounts, audit, tax and financial reporting. Choose CS if you want to work with company law, board procedure and compliance. The question that matters is which work you will do for the next ten years, not which exam is rumoured to be easier.

Direct Entry lets you skip Foundation and register at Intermediate. ICAI's course guide requires 55% in a graduation or postgraduation in Commerce, or 60% in any other discipline. Passing the Intermediate of ICSI or of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) also qualifies.

Why do pass rates mislead the CA vs CS choice?

Pass rates mislead because ICAI and ICSI do not report results the same way. ICAI also publishes a separate "both groups" rate for candidates who sat both groups together, while ICSI reports per group. Only the per-group figures compare like for like.

Exam, 2026 sessionGroup 1Group 2
CA Intermediate (May)10.25%16.11%
CA Final (May)12.00%20.49%
CS Executive (June)17.41%22.19%
CS Professional (June)32.69%29.49%

Sources: ICAI results for Intermediate and Final; ICSI result announcement for the June 2026 session, declared on 25 August 2026. CA Foundation has no groups. ICAI reports 20.09% passing (18,124 of 90,217) for May 2026.

What the table shows:

  • CS passes a higher share of those who sit. Executive groups ran 6 to 7 points above Intermediate groups (17.41% against 10.25%, and 22.19% against 16.11%). Professional groups ran about 21 and 9 points above Final groups (32.69% against 12.00%, and 29.49% against 20.49%).
  • CS is not a soft option. A 17.41% pass rate means 82.59% of candidates did not clear Executive Group 1.
  • Pooling the CA groups gives one fairer figure. This is our model, built from ICAI's counts of those who passed and those who appeared. Intermediate: (9,350 + 10,372) ÷ (91,237 + 64,381) = 12.67%. Final: (6,555 + 8,725) ÷ (54,606 + 42,573) = 15.72%.
  • ICAI's "both groups" figures measure something else. It reports 8.47% of Intermediate and 14.07% of Final candidates clearing both groups in one sitting. That counts only students who attempt both groups together, so do not set it against a single-group rate.

Pass rate measures who sat the paper, not how hard it will be for you. A student weak at calculations can find CS more passable, and a student who dislikes long legal answers can find the reverse. That is why the tests at the end of this page matter more than any percentage.

What do CA and CS cost in official fees?

As of October 2026, official fees including exam fees come to ₹84,500 for CA via Foundation and ₹54,000 for CS via the entry test, before coaching and books. By Direct Entry CA costs ₹74,000, and for a CS candidate exempt from CSEET the total is ₹50,000. These totals are our sums.

StageCACS
Entry levelFoundation: ₹9,000 registration + ₹1,500 exam = ₹10,500CSEET: ₹7,500 registration + ₹1,500 exam = ₹9,000
Middle levelIntermediate: ₹18,000 registration + ₹2,700 exams (both groups) + ₹13,500 ICITSS (IT and orientation training) = ₹34,200Executive: ₹18,400 registration + 2 groups × ₹1,500 = ₹21,400
Final levelFinal: ₹22,000 registration + ₹3,300 exams (both groups) + ₹14,500 AICITSS (advanced IT and management training) = ₹39,800Professional: ₹20,000 education and pre-exam test fee + 2 groups × ₹1,800 = ₹23,600
Total₹84,500₹54,000

Working: CA is ₹10,500 + ₹34,200 + ₹39,800. CS is ₹9,000 + ₹21,400 + ₹23,600. Direct Entry drops Foundation: ₹34,200 + ₹39,800 = ₹74,000. For CS, replacing the CSEET with the ₹5,000 exemption fee gives ₹5,000 + ₹21,400 + ₹23,600 = ₹50,000.

The Professional ₹20,000 is ICSI's education fee (₹19,000) plus a ₹1,000 pre-exam test fee. It does not include exams, which are charged per group on top. The Executive figure leaves out ICSI's optional ₹500 journal.

Both sets assume one on-time attempt per exam. Each retake costs the exam fee again: ₹1,500 for a CS Executive group and ₹1,800 for a Professional group. For CA, exam fees are ₹1,500 for Foundation, ₹1,500 per Intermediate group and ₹1,800 per Final group.

Our CA course fees guide breaks down the CA side further, and our guide to CS Executive registration, route and real cost does the same for CS.

How long do CA and CS take, and what is the training like?

CA training lasts 2 years. CS requires an Executive Development Programme and 21 months of practical training. Training is where the two careers actually diverge. ICAI's new scheme, effective 1 July 2023, set CA practical training at 2 years, and ICSI sets out its requirements on its training page.

A trainee and a senior professional reviewing paper files together at a desk in an office.
Practical training means working on real files beside a senior, which is where the two careers start to differ.

In our view, training tells you more about the career than the syllabus does. A CA trainee spends two years inside an audit, tax or finance team. A CS trainee spends 21 months in a company secretarial department, learning board meetings, filings and compliance calendars. If that daily work does not appeal, the exam stages around it will be a long way to walk.

Does CA pay more than CS?

On the evidence we could find, yes at the top end, and CA is also the better documented. ICAI's report on its 61st campus placement programme for newly qualified CAs records 204 organisations, an average pay of ₹12.86 lakh per annum (LPA) and a highest domestic package of ₹29 LPA. That is a placement-round average, so it covers only candidates placed through ICAI's rounds and is not the pay of every new CA. Our CA salary guide looks at what a newly qualified CA takes home.

More recent rounds have pushed the ceiling higher. ICAI's 64th programme brochure records a highest package of ₹32.33 LPA in the December 2025 to January 2026 round. Treat that as a ceiling, not an expectation. We found no ICAI figure for pay by years of experience.

For CS, we found no ICSI-wide average. What exists are single-employer offers: a 2023 ICSI campus drive notice for the National Stock Exchange of India listed an annual cost to company of ₹8.00 lakh. One employer is not a market average. Our page on company secretary salary evidence in 2026 sets out what else is known.

Demand for CS comes from the law. Section 203 of the Companies Act, 2013, with its rules, requires listed companies and public companies with paid-up capital of ₹10 crore or more to appoint a whole-time company secretary. Our view is that CS pay therefore follows the size and listing status of the employer more than the qualification itself.

Before you decide on pay alone, compare the roles you would actually apply for. A CS earning less than a CA in the same company is usually a difference between two roles, not between two qualifications.

How can you test your fit for CA or CS this week?

Run these five tests and record the result of each. The pass lines are our recommendation. Tests 1 to 3 each point towards CA, CS or neither. Tests 4 and 5 are checks on the route you lean towards, not votes.

Each test is a small, hands-on task you can finish at a desk in one sitting.
  1. 1

    Test 1: Numbers test

Pick a Class 12 Accountancy chapter you have not revised. Close the book and solve 10 questions in 60 minutes. Seven or more right is a CA signal. Four or fewer right is not.
  2. 2

    Test 2: Reading test

Open the latest annual general meeting notice of any listed company on its investor page. In 30 minutes, explain each of the first five resolutions in one sentence of your own words. Explaining four or five of them without dreading it is a CS signal. Two or fewer is not.
  3. 3

    Test 3: Job test

Choose three roles you could see yourself in at 28. Open 10 live postings for each in your city, 30 in all, and count how many name CA and how many name CS. Twenty or more naming one qualification is a signal for it. Anything less is no signal.
  4. 4

    Test 4: Money test

Take the total for your route from the fee table (₹84,500 for CA via Foundation or ₹54,000 for CS via the entry test) and add your coaching quotes and 10% for retakes. Pass if your family can fund that full amount without borrowing. If you fail, change the plan before you change the qualification.
  5. 5

    Test 5: Monday test

Ask one CA at a firm and one CS at a company to describe their last Monday in detail. Pass if you can retell it afterwards and would still choose to live it five days a week. If you pass for only one of them, that is your tie-breaker.

Tally tests 1 to 3. If two of the three point to one qualification, register for that route, once tests 4 and 5 pass. If they split, or none point anywhere, talk it through before paying any fee.

Frequently asked questions

Group for group, CS pass rates were higher in 2026, but easier depends on you. Only 17.41% passed CS Executive Group 1, so the exams are demanding on both sides. Choose by whether you cope better with calculations or with law and long written answers.
CA has the stronger documented pay, with ICAI's placement rounds recording a ₹12.86 LPA average and a ₹32.33 LPA highest package in the December 2025 to January 2026 round. For CS we found no ICSI-wide average, so compare the actual postings you would apply to.
No. CS is a separate qualification with its own entry test, exams and training, so moving to it is a switch, not a rescue. A graduate can have the CSEET waived with the ₹5,000 exemption fee, so you need not restart from the entry test. Switch only if the work appeals.
Do it only if you want company secretarial or governance roles, because it will not help an audit or tax career. ICSI's schedule exempts ICAI Final passers from the CSEET for a ₹5,000 exemption fee, and by our sums the rest of the route then comes to ₹50,000. Check with ICSI whether any further exemptions apply to you.
CMA is a third route, awarded by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India and centred on costing and management accounting. CA centres on audit, tax and reporting, and CS on company law and governance. Pick the one whose daily work you want.
