CMA Salary in India: What Freshers Get vs ICMAI's Average

CMA salary in India for a fresher is about ₹5 lakh a year in Payscale's entry-level data, while ICMAI's campus placement average is ₹12 to 13 lakh for a different group.

Key takeaways

  • Expect about ₹5 lakh a year in CTC (cost to company, the full yearly package before any deduction) for a first cost-accounting job, going by Payscale's entry-level data. Our own median of eight coaching-provider guides is ₹4.5 to ₹8.5 lakh, a rougher cross-check.
  • ICMAI's own campus average is ₹12 to 13 lakh, with single top offers of ₹26 lakh and ₹36 lakh in 2025. Treat it as a target for candidates who get through a campus drive, not as a base.
  • CTC divided by 12 overstates what you receive. In our worked example, ₹8 lakh of CTC credits about ₹50,200 a month, not ₹66,667.
  • Check any offer by working out take-home pay with the five-line decoder below, which also places the offer against the reference points on this page.

Two reliable sources can put a new CMA's starting pay several lakh rupees apart, and both can be right, because they measure different people. One measures candidates who went through the campus drives of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). The other measures whoever shows up in a salary database or a published guide.

A highest offer and a package divided by twelve both overstate a new CMA's pay. One quotes the best offer anyone has seen, and the other calls the result a monthly salary.

This page keeps the numbers apart. It uses ICMAI's own placement brochure and campus schedules, a salary-database sample, and a calculation we made from eight coaching-provider salary guides. Then it shows how to turn any offer into the amount that reaches your bank account.

"CMA" here means the Cost and Management Accountant qualification from ICMAI, called CMA India. US CMA, the Certified Management Accountant credential from the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), is a separate qualification, and its pay is not covered here.

What is the CMA salary in India for a newly qualified fresher?

Payscale's entry-level average for cost accountants is ₹5.01 lakh a year, and our own median of eight coaching-provider guides gives a fresher range of ₹4.5 to ₹8.5 lakh. ICMAI's campus average of ₹12 to 13 lakh is a higher benchmark for a different group.

The numbers differ because the groups differ. Our advice is to anchor on the Payscale entry-level figure, check it against the guide median, and ask what would put you in the campus group.

What does ICMAI's own placement data say about CMA pay?

ICMAI's placement brochure (December 2025 term, April to May 2026) gives an average CTC of ₹12 to 13 lakh. It reports a highest offer of ₹36 lakh from Trident in the April to May 2025 campus. It reports ₹26 lakh from Power Finance Corporation, a public sector undertaking (PSU, a government-owned company), in the October to December 2025 campus. The campuses are organised for each term's newly qualified CMAs. The brochure is ICMAI's own document.

Its chart of top offers from 2018 to 2025 runs from ₹14.5 lakh (Vedanta) to ₹36 lakh (Trident). Every bar on that chart is a best-case offer.

ICMAI does not state how many candidates or offers the ₹12 to 13 lakh average covers, or whether it is a mean or a median. This average describes candidates who were placed through ICMAI campuses, not all newly qualified CMAs.

The brochure counts 90 organisations in the October to December 2025 campus (the June 2025 term), split as follows.

  • Manufacturing: 24
  • IT, consulting and advisory firms: 18
  • PSUs: 13
  • Other private companies: 13
  • FMCG, pharma, agri and hospitality: 9
  • Financial services and banking: 7
  • Motor companies: 3
  • Construction: 2
  • Power: 1

Most campus employers are private companies, and manufacturing is the largest group. The split shows who recruits, not what each sector pays.

Two newly qualified candidates in formal wear sit across a table from two recruiters in a campus interview room.
A campus drive puts each term's newly qualified CMAs in front of recruiters, which is why its averages describe that group and not all fresher hires.

Why do CMA fresher salary guides disagree, and what do they add up to?

The guides agree on the floor and disagree on the ceiling. Their lowest fresher figures cluster at ₹4 to ₹6 lakh, while their highest run from ₹6 to ₹12.5 lakh. We read eight CMA India salary guides from coaching providers in October 2026. Seven carry dates between March and October 2026, and one is undated. We took each one's headline fresher range.

The sorted lows are 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5.5, 6 and 6, so the median low is 4.5 (the average of the fourth and fifth values). The sorted highs are 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9, 11 and 12.5, so the median high is 8.5. These medians are our own calculation from eight coaching-provider pages, not a range any guide states. Only one of the eight guides reaches ICMAI's ₹12 to 13 lakh average at its upper end.

We sell CMA coaching, so we are part of this market. None of our own pages was among the eight.

Payscale's database is a useful check from a different kind of source. As of its 12 February 2026 update, the Payscale cost accountant page shows an average of ₹5,96,437 from 54 salary profiles, with base salary from ₹3.5 lakh (10th percentile) to ₹10 lakh (90th percentile). Its entry-level average is ₹5,01,390. The job title is cost accountant, so the sample includes people who are not qualified CMAs, and it is small.

Which employers recruit CMAs, and how many turn up each cycle?

ICMAI campuses list between 34 and 66 organisation names per cycle (our count of the schedule pages), and ICMAI's own totals are higher. ICMAI runs campus drives twice a year, with the schedule published on its site. Our count, taken in October 2026, is of distinct organisation names on each cycle's ICMAI campus schedule, with ITC's divisions counted separately. The sector split above shows which kinds of employer recruit.

CycleNames listed (our count)
October to November 202338
April to May 202434
September to October 202466
April to May 202535
October to December 202566
April to May 202663

The schedule pages list fewer names than ICMAI's own totals. The brochure counts 90 organisations for the October to December 2025 campus, against 66 names listed on that schedule page. Read our counts as the minimum.

Our advice: because the number of recruiters swings from 34 to 66 names between cycles, do not build a plan on one cycle. The cycle that follows your result is the one that matters.

How do you turn a CMA offer's CTC into monthly take-home pay?

Subtract what you never receive as monthly salary, subtract your own deductions, then divide by 12. For an ₹8 lakh CTC, our worked example credits about ₹50,200 a month, roughly a quarter below the ₹66,667 you get by dividing by 12.

Use these five lines with the figures from your own offer letter.

  1. Write down the CTC.
  2. Subtract the employer's provident fund (PF, a retirement contribution), the gratuity (a benefit the employer accrues for you) and any insurance cost. Subtract variable pay too, because it is paid as a yearly payout.
  3. Subtract your own PF contribution and professional tax.
  4. Subtract income tax.
  5. Divide the result by 12 for your monthly credit.

Our model for ₹8 lakh CTC assumes basic pay of 50% of CTC, variable pay of 10% of CTC, employer and employee PF at 12% of basic, gratuity at 4.81% of basic and professional tax of ₹2,400. Your letter will differ, so replace these assumptions.

A hand with a pen works through a printed offer letter beside a calculator and notepad.
Working down an offer line by line shows how much of the headline package never reaches your account as monthly pay.
LineAmount (₹)
CTC8,00,000
Employer PF (12% of ₹4,00,000 basic)−48,000
Gratuity (4.81% of basic)−19,240
Variable pay, received yearly, not monthly (10% of CTC)−80,000
Employee PF−48,000
Professional tax−2,400
Income tax0
Yearly amount credited through monthly pay6,02,360
Monthly creditabout 50,200

The ₹50,200 is the monthly credit only. The ₹80,000 of variable pay is received yearly, not monthly.

As of October 2026, for tax year 2026-27 (assessment year 2027-28) under the Income-tax Act, 2025, the new regime gives a rebate of up to ₹60,000 where taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh, and salaried people get a ₹75,000 standard deduction. The Income Tax Department page we link sets out the rebate for assessment year 2026-27, and we have not checked the ₹75,000 figure on that page, so confirm both on the current-year page before you rely on them. In the example, taxable salary is ₹7,32,760 (CTC less employer PF and gratuity). After the ₹75,000 standard deduction it is ₹6,57,760, well inside the ₹12 lakh limit, so income tax is nil. Taxable salary cannot exceed CTC, so on salary alone an offer at or below ₹12 lakh owes no income tax under that rule.

Run the test on your own letter by comparing the monthly credit with CTC divided by 12. If it is under 10% below, most of the CTC is fixed pay. If it is 10 to 25% below, ask HR for the monthly breakup. If it is more than 25% below, much of the CTC is variable or employer-side. Those thresholds are our rule of thumb, and our example, about 25% below, falls in the middle band.

How should you plan your CMA route around these salary numbers?

Plan for the Payscale entry-level figure, build towards the campus benchmark, and judge the route by tuition set against take-home pay. Our advice: aim to clear each level in the fewest attempts, because ICMAI organises each campus for the newly qualified CMAs of one term.

Here is how we help with that at iProledge. Our CMA India coaching covers Foundation, Intermediate and Final, in blended, live online and onsite formats. Live online classes are open to learners across India, and our enquiry centres are in Jayanagar and Malleshwaram, Bengaluru. Every course includes recordings, study materials, practice questions and mock tests. Doubt clearing, study planning, mentoring, résumé help and interview help come with them. We have trained 16,000+ students.

Our CMA India tuition as of October 2026:

  • CMA Foundation: ₹22,000
  • CMA Intermediate: ₹50,000
  • CMA Final: ₹10,000 per paper, so ₹80,000 for all eight papers

That totals ₹1,52,000 for tuition across the three levels. Divided by the take-home of about ₹50,200 a month in our worked example, it is about 3 months of take-home pay. That is our arithmetic, tuition only, and it is not a promise of any job or salary. ICMAI's own registration and exam fees are extra and are not included. We take UPI, net banking, cards and flexible payment plans.

Frequently asked questions

Before deductions, the guide median of ₹4.5 to ₹8.5 lakh equals ₹37,500 to ₹70,833 a month. The credit is lower after PF, yearly variable pay and professional tax.
No. ICMAI's average describes candidates placed through its campuses, and it does not state how many that is. Treat ₹12 lakh as a target, not a base.
No. US CMA is a separate qualification awarded by IMA, so the figures on this page apply to CMA India only. Our US CMA course details page explains how that route works for Indian candidates.

Yes, ICMAI's campus schedule includes a Bengaluru centre. As of 23 October 2026, the October to November 2026 schedule listed nine organisations for it. Check the current schedule for your own cycle.

It is worth it if you clear each level within the attempts you planned and take a job at a CTC like our ₹8 lakh worked example, where tuition of ₹1,52,000 is about 3 months of take-home pay at ₹50,200. It excludes ICMAI's own fees and guarantees no job.
