CMA eligibility in India

Definition
CMA eligibility in India is the ICMAI rule set that determines whether a student enters Foundation or registers directly for Intermediate, and when they may progress to Final. Foundation admission can begin after Class 10, but the Foundation examination needs Class 12 or an accepted equivalent; direct entry reaches Intermediate, not Final.
In practice
- Class 10 supports Foundation admission, while Class 12 or an accepted equivalent is required before the Foundation examination.
- Direct entry is an Intermediate registration route for candidates with an ICMAI-listed qualification.
- A complete pass in both Intermediate groups is required before Final enrolment.
- Provisional status has a conversion deadline and should not be treated as automatic examination eligibility.
Foundation has two separate thresholds
Foundation is often described as an after-Class-12 route, but ICMAI makes a more precise distinction. A Class 10 pass can support Foundation admission, while the candidate needs 10+2 or an accepted equivalent to sit the Foundation examination. ICMAI also allows provisional Foundation admission, with 36 months to convert to regular status, under its live course-eligibility rules.
That distinction matters for planning. A student waiting for Class 12 results can begin the admission process, but should not build an examination plan on Class 10 alone.
Direct entry starts at Intermediate
Direct entry means that an eligible candidate bypasses Foundation and registers for Intermediate. ICMAI’s live list includes a recognised university degree, specified CAT qualifications, qualifying engineering credentials and other qualifications in Annexure VI. A degree-result candidate may register provisionally, but ICMAI gives 18 months to convert that status to regular.
Direct entry is not a shortcut through the qualification. It does not grant Final enrolment, waive the need to pass Intermediate, or remove later training and examination conditions.
Final follows a complete Intermediate pass
The CMA India course guide places Final after a candidate qualifies Intermediate in both groups. Final is therefore a later stage, not a route that a graduate or other direct-entry candidate can enter immediately.
The practical trade-off is simple: direct Intermediate entry can remove the Foundation stage, but it is not suitable for a candidate whose qualification is not on ICMAI’s list or whose supporting documents are not ready.
Choose the entry route before setting a budget
Official course fees are stage-specific. ICMAI’s published inland course fees are ₹6,000 for Foundation, ₹23,100 for Intermediate and ₹25,000 for Final, separate from private coaching and examination applications. Choose the eligible stage first, then use the related fee guide and calculator to plan only the official costs and optional support that apply.
A dated eligibility map
The route has two entry points that converge at Intermediate. ICMAI’s current course-eligibility criteria separate Foundation admission from Foundation examination eligibility and list alternative Intermediate qualifications.
Provisional Foundation admission has a 36-month conversion window, while provisional Intermediate registration for candidates awaiting degree results has an 18-month conversion window.

Frequently asked
Yes. ICMAI says Class 10 or an equivalent qualification from a recognised board or institution is sufficient for Foundation admission. Passing Class 10 does not by itself make a student eligible to take the Foundation examination, because ICMAI separately requires 10+2 or an accepted equivalent for that examination.
No. ICMAI distinguishes admission from examination eligibility: a Class 10 pass can support Foundation admission, but a student must pass the Senior Secondary 10+2 examination or an accepted equivalent before appearing for the CMA Foundation examination.
ICMAI lists several Intermediate-entry qualifications, including a recognised university degree, specified CAT qualifications, qualifying engineering credentials and other listed professional qualifications. The exact credential should be checked against ICMAI’s live eligibility page and Annexure VI before choosing Intermediate instead of Foundation.
No. Direct entry is a route into CMA Intermediate, not CMA Final. ICMAI’s course flow states that a student must qualify Intermediate in both groups before enrolling for Final, and must qualify Final in both groups before applying for membership.
