Is ACCA Hard? Paper-by-Paper Difficulty for Indian Students

Is ACCA hard? Yes, but it is passable. In ACCA’s September 2026 results, the 11 Applied Skills and Strategic Professional session papers had pass rates of 41% to 54%, while Applied Knowledge ran from 65% to 89% in June 2026. Difficulty depends on the paper.

Key takeaways

  • ACCA is hard but passable. In September 2026, the 11 papers ACCA listed had pass rates of 41% to 54%, and 7 of them were under 50%.

  • The first level is much easier. The four on-demand papers (BT, FA, MA and LW, which you can sit at any time) passed 65% to 89% in June 2026, against 39% to 55% for the 11 session papers that month. Part of that gap reflects who sits each type of paper.

  • APM and Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA) stay lowest. Both were in the lowest three in March, June and September 2026. A gap of a few points between sittings is variation, not a trend.

  • Written answers decide the hard papers. ACCA’s examiner reports describe marks lost on generic or thin answers, so practise case answers under time and plan your papers around your work.

ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) currently has 13 exams across three levels: Applied Knowledge (three exams), Applied Skills (six) and Strategic Professional (four). The structure changes from 2027, covered below.

You do not sit every Strategic Professional paper. That level has two essential papers plus two options chosen from four, so you sit four of its six papers, and the options differ in pass rate.

ACCA publishes pass rates for each paper after every sitting, so you can judge difficulty paper by paper. The spread is wide, so the honest answer to “is ACCA hard?” depends on which papers you mean. A pass rate also describes everyone who sat that session, resitters included, so read it as a snapshot of that group, not a fixed measure of difficulty.

The sections below show which papers stay low across three sittings, how your background changes the picture, where marks are lost in the written papers, and what to practise before you commit to a study plan.

Is ACCA hard? ACCA pass rate by paper for March, June and September 2026

ACCA is hard from the session-based Applied Skills papers upwards (TX, FR, PM, FM, AA). In September 2026, ACCA's published pass rates for the 11 papers it listed ran from 41% (APM) to 54% (Taxation, TX), and 7 of the 11 were under 50%. The four on-demand papers (BT, FA, MA, LW) reported in June 2026 ran from 65% to 89%. The difference partly reflects who sits each type of paper.

Figures are ACCA's published pass rates from its results for March 2026, June 2026 and September 2026, also shown on ACCA's pass-rate page. BT, FA, MA and LW are on-demand papers, so they appear in June 2026 only.

A pass rate counts everyone who sat the paper in that session, resitters included. It describes the group, not your own chances. We found no India-only figure in ACCA's published results, so nothing in this table is specific to Indian candidates.

Applied Knowledge (BT, FA, MA; on-demand, June 2026 only)

In ACCA's June 2026 results, BT passed 89%, FA 71% and MA 65%. These are the gentlest papers. MA at 65% deserves respect, because the costing habits it builds are the ones PM later asks you to apply.

Applied Skills (LW, TX, FR, PM, FM, AA; LW is on-demand)

LW passed 82% in June 2026. Within the same sitting, the five session papers were lower: TX 55%, FR 52%, PM 41%, FM 48% and AA 47%. That gap partly reflects who sits each type of paper. In September 2026, the session papers were TX 54%, FR 49%, FM 47%, AA 45% and PM 42%.

Strategic Professional

In September 2026, SBL passed 53%, ATX 53%, SBR 50%, AFM 47%, AAA 42% and APM 41%. SBL is a case-based paper, and our SBL preparation plan covers how to approach it.

Which are the hardest ACCA papers?

APM and AAA are the hardest ACCA papers on the published numbers. Both sat within the lowest three in March, June and September 2026 (APM 40%, 42%, 41%; AAA 42%, 39%, 42%). PM joined them in the lowest three in June and September 2026, but at 45% in March 2026 it ranked behind AA and AFM.

In September 2026, AA (45%), FM (47%), AFM (47%) and FR (49%) were also under 50%. We counted papers under 50% from the table above: 7 of 11 in September 2026, 8 of 11 in June 2026 and 5 of 11 in March 2026. A paper at exactly 50% (SBR in September 2026) is not counted as under.

Treat a few points of movement as variation. ATX moved from 47% to 53% and PM from 41% to 45% across the three sittings, so a one-to-three-point gap between two papers tells you nothing.

What the examiner reports show for APM and AAA: both put 50 of 100 marks on one compulsory case question, and each carries 20 professional skills marks for communication, analysis, judgement and commercial awareness (AAA report, March/June 2026, APM report, March/June 2026). A weak case answer cannot be rescued elsewhere.

For PM, FR and AFM, our recommendation is to start with our PM guide on variance analysis and decision-making, our FR guide on essential International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) topics, and our AFM guide.

Is ACCA harder for commerce graduates, CA students or working professionals?

ACCA's published results are not split by degree, work background or country, so no table can tell you how hard the papers will be for you. What changes with your starting point is how many papers you sit and how familiar they feel.

  • Commerce graduates (B.Com, BBA): depending on your degree and university, you may be eligible for exemptions from some early papers, so you could start nearer Applied Skills, where pass rates fall. Check your degree in ACCA's exemption tool or in our guide to ACCA exemptions.
  • CA students and dropouts: exemptions can depend on the CA stage you have cleared, so check your exact position before you register rather than assuming a number.
  • Working professionals without a finance background: you will usually start at Applied Knowledge, the level with the highest pass rates, which gives you time to build written-answer habits before the harder papers.

An exemption removes papers; it does not make the papers you still sit easier. ACCA says it will continue to recognise relevant prior learning in the redesigned qualification.

Where do ACCA candidates lose marks?

ACCA's AAA and APM examiner reports describe marks lost on generic written answers and on time spent in the wrong place. Examiners for AAA (March/June 2026) reported vague answers not tailored to the scenario. Examiners for APM (March/June 2026) reported many brief responses that did not address the requirement. ACCA reports these patterns for candidates as a whole. It does not report them by country, so we cannot say which apply most to Indian candidates.

On time: the AAA March/June 2026 report tells candidates not to waste time prioritising business risks when the requirement does not ask for it. That is lost time on a paper where one question carries half the marks.

Scenarios use fictional companies, such as Meridian Airways in AAA and Yarrow in APM (both March/June 2026). Every answer must be built from facts in the question, not from remembered theory.

Studying alongside a job or degree is the other squeeze. Our recommendation: take fewer papers per sitting rather than more, especially at Applied Skills, where the step down begins. Our guide to studying ACCA while working covers planning.

Test each practice answer against these:

  • Each paragraph names at least one fact from the case.
  • The longest part of your answer sits against the highest-mark requirement.
  • Your first sentence answers the exact verb asked (for example, "evaluate" or "recommend").
A student's hands write a long answer on lined paper beside a desk clock and a printed case scenario sheet.
Written answers that run long or miss the scenario cost marks as quickly as the clock does.

Will the 2027 ACCA redesign make the exams easier or harder?

Nobody can say yet whether the redesigned exams are easier or harder, because no pass rates exist for them. ACCA states the qualification will remain as rigorous as ever, and that existing passes carry over under its transition rules. As of November 2026, the published timeline is as follows.

The final sittings of the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams are in June 2027.

  • ACCA's transition guidance says students must complete all Applied Skills exams in or before the June 2027 session to complete that level under the current rules. If you have not passed LW by transition, you will sit it as K3 Business Law in the redesigned qualification.
  • ACCA says Applied Knowledge exams (BT, MA, FA) and the Foundations in Professionalism module must be completed by mid-July 2027 to earn the current Diploma in Accounting and Business, with exact dates still to be confirmed.
  • Foundations and Knowledge exams are available on-demand from July 2027.
  • Expertise and Strategic Professional exams start with the September 2027 session.
  • The new qualification has 11 exams without the Foundations level: three Knowledge, five Expertise and three Strategic Professional (two core plus one option).

ACCA has published transition guidance, including completion dates by level and an online tool that maps your expected passes onto the new structure. It also says it will continue to recognise relevant prior learning. Check your own position on ACCA's pages before choosing a start date. We expect the habits that matter (case-based written answers, timing) to carry over, but that is our inference, not ACCA's statement.

Is ACCA harder than CA?

ACCA is not simply harder or easier than Chartered Accountancy (CA). The two test different things and are taken in different ways, so a pass-rate comparison would mislead. Our ACCA vs CA guide compares structure and scope, and our guide to CA course duration sets out the CA timeline.

What helps you pass the hard ACCA papers?

Timed written practice on case questions, followed by review against the published answer, is what helps most. ACCA advises candidates to use its Practice Platform and read published answers alongside each examiner's report. Four habits:

  1. Read the examiner's report for your paper before you start, and again before a resit.
  2. Write timed case answers, not just calculations, and spend time in proportion to marks.
  3. Sit full mock tests so the clock is familiar before the real exam.
  4. Get your written answers reviewed by someone who knows what ACCA examiners reward, since you cannot see your own generic phrasing.

Reviewing a timed answer against the published solution shows exactly where marks were missed.

How does iProledge support ACCA candidates?

Our ACCA coaching starts with a free demo class. We ask students to visit us and speak to our Career Advisors before joining a course, so the plan fits your papers and your work.

  • Formats: blended, live online and onsite in Bengaluru, with enquiry centres in Jayanagar and Malleshwaram.
  • Practice: practice questions and mock tests, which you can use for the timed case practice above.
  • Support: doubt clearing, so a weak answer gets explained rather than repeated.

See our ACCA courses for what each level covers.

What should you do next if ACCA is hard for you?

Treat ACCA's difficulty as a planning problem, not a verdict. If you work full time, sit one session paper at a time and spend your first weeks on timed case answers, not only notes. If you are choosing Strategic Professional options, read each paper's latest examiner's report first and ignore pass-rate gaps of one to three points.

If you have already failed a paper, read its examiner's report line by line and rewrite your weakest answer under time. If you are unsure how many papers your degree leaves you, check your exemptions before you register.

Frequently asked questions

Neither is simply harder: ACCA is taken paper by paper and CA follows the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)'s own scheme, so a single pass-rate comparison would mislead. Our ACCA vs CA guide compares structure, scope and cost in full.
On ACCA's published pass rates, APM and AAA. APM passed 41% of sitters in September 2026 and 40% in March 2026; AAA passed 39% in June 2026. A few points either way is normal variation.
It is passable but not effortless. Pass rates cover all sitters, so they do not measure ability. Examiner reports describe marks lost on generic, thin answers, which is a practice habit: write timed answers built on case facts, and get them reviewed.
Yes, but plan for fewer papers per sitting. Our recommendation, not an ACCA rule, is to take one or two session papers at a time around a job.
No. Pass rates for most session papers are under 50% (September 2026), though with steady written practice it is passable.
