CA Course Duration: The Real Timeline Under ICAI's New Scheme

CA course duration is at least 42 months on paper. First-attempt journeys run about 4.5 years from Foundation registration in the Class 12 year, or about 4.1 years from direct-entry Intermediate registration.

Key takeaways

  • The CA course takes at least 42 months on paper. In our model, a first-attempt journey takes about 4.5 years from Foundation registration in January of the Class 12 year. A graduate entering Intermediate directly in the final year of graduation needs about 4.1 years.
  • Articleship is two years, not three. You can sit Final only if your training ended at least six months before the first day of the exam month.
  • Foundation and Intermediate sittings come every four months, but Final sits only in May and November. So in our model, one missed attempt at any level pushes your finish back by six months, to the next Final sitting.
  • Your finish date depends on dates as much as on marks. The registration cut-off and the month your articleship starts can decide which Final sitting you get.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) sets a minimum period for every stage of CA: four months of registration before the Foundation exam, eight months before Intermediate, two years of articleship (practical training), and a six-month wait before Final. Those minimums add up to a tidy number. A calendar does not.

Exams run in fixed months, registration closes months before each one, and results land after the next cut-off has already passed. None of that waiting is in the minimums. A student who clears every exam first time therefore still finishes later than the sum suggests.

Below, the rules sit next to the real sitting months. You get finish dates for a student after Class 12 and for a graduate, the cost of one missed attempt at each level, and a worksheet to find your own date. We coach CA Foundation and CA Intermediate at iProledge in Bengaluru.

What is the CA course duration under ICAI's new scheme?

The CA course takes at least 42 months under ICAI's new scheme: 4 months of Foundation study, 8 months of Intermediate study, 24 months of articleship and a 6-month wait before Final. A graduate entering Intermediate directly needs at least 38 months. As of October 2026, the rules in the Gazette of India amendment of 2023 and ICAI's regional council FAQ are:

StageMinimum period or condition
CA FoundationRegistered at least 4 months before the first day of the exam month. You must also have appeared in Class 12 before the exam.
CA IntermediateRegistered at least 8 months before the first day of the exam month. You come in by passing Foundation, or directly as a graduate.
ICITSS (Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills)4 weeks, completed before articleship starts.
Articleship2 years, starting only after both Intermediate groups are passed. Industrial training of 9 to 12 months can sit inside the 2 years, and 12 leaves a year are permitted.
Advanced ICITSS4 weeks, after articleship and before Final.
Wait before FinalTraining must have been completed at least 6 months before the first day of the exam month.
CA Final

Needs Final registration, both Intermediate groups passed, Advanced ICITSS and four self-paced online modules (a pass needs 50% in each module, under Regulation 51F(2)).

The direct-entry route is open to commerce graduates with at least 55% and to other graduates with at least 60%. Intermediate-level passers of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India or the Institute of Cost Accountants of India can also enter this way.

These totals are our sums of the minimums above: 4 + 8 + 24 + 6 = 42 months from Foundation, and 8 + 24 + 6 = 38 months from direct entry. They ignore the four-week courses and every wait between exams.

Articleship is two years, not three. The Gazette amendment replaced "three years" with "two years" in Regulation 50. Only candidates already registered as articled assistants (students in articleship under a principal) for three years before the change continue their three-year training contract.

Why do other websites still say the CA course takes 5 years?

Many guides were written for the old scheme and never updated. Some add a 3-year articleship, a 6-month wait before Final and a 2-month result to reach 5 years. That arithmetic no longer applies to students starting practical training now. The table shows what changed.

PointOld schemeCurrent scheme
Articleship3 years2 years
Who it applies toStudents who began 3-year training before the 2023 changeStudents starting practical training under the new scheme
When you can sit FinalWhile still serving the last six months of trainingAfter the full 2 years, with training ended at least 6 months before the first day of the exam month
Self-paced online modulesNot part of the schemeFour modules, with 50% needed in each

This is why we build the dates in this guide from the 2-year articleship and the real sitting months, instead of quoting a round 5 years.

CA course duration after 10th, 12th and graduation

The route you enter by decides the length. The figures below use the same rules and model as the rest of this guide, counted from the registration that starts your journey.

RouteColumnMinimum on paperFirst attempt in our model
After Class 10Provisional Foundation registration. You can sit the exam only after appearing in Class 12.42 months from Foundation registrationSame as the Class 12 route, because the earliest Foundation sitting is May of your Class 12 year
After Class 12Foundation registration at least 4 months before the sitting42 monthsAbout 4.5 years (54 months) from registration in January of the Class 12 year, or about 4.6 years (55 months) if you register in June after the results
After graduationDirect entry to Intermediate with 55% in commerce or 60% in other subjects38 monthsAbout 4.1 years (49 months) from provisional registration in the final year of graduation
After postgraduation or an MBADirect entry with the same marks rule38 monthsSame as the graduate route

Registering after Class 10 does not shorten the course. It only lets you register early, and the exam still waits for your Class 12 year. Counting from your Class 10 result, add the two school years to the figures above. A postgraduate degree such as an MBA does not shorten the course either, because the route and the timeline are the same as for any other graduate. Your Class 12 stream, whether commerce, science or arts, does not change the duration.

Why does the CA course take about 4.5 years from Foundation registration when the rules add up to 42 months?

A first-attempt journey from Foundation registration to the Final result takes about 54 months, 12 more than the rules' minimum, because of waiting. Here is our model for a student who registers for Foundation on 1 January 2027 and passes every exam at the first sitting. That is registration in January of the Class 12 year, before the board exams and results.

A young articled assistant reviews ledgers at a desk in a chartered accountancy office while a senior accountant looks on.
Articleship fills two years of the journey, and the long waits between stages are what stretch the total past the rules' 42 months.

The sittings are Foundation and Intermediate in January, May and September (reported in 2024). Final sits in May and November. ICAI's Council decided on 6 April 2026 to hold Final twice a year from May 2026 (Taxscan, BusinessToday).

StepDate in the modelRule applied
Register for Foundation1 Jan 20274 months before 1 May
Foundation examMay 2027
Foundation resultabout Jul 2027Assumed 2 months after the exam month starts
Register for IntermediateJul 2027Needs the Foundation pass
Intermediate examMay 2028Needs registration by 1 Sep 2027. The January 2028 sitting needed 1 May 2027, before the Foundation result.
Intermediate resultabout Jul 2028
ICITSS, then articleship startsAug 2028Assumed 1 month after the result
Articleship endsAug 203024 months
First possible FinalMay 2031Training must end by 1 Nov 2030. November 2030 would need 1 May 2030.
Final resultabout Jul 2031

That runs from January 2027 to July 2031, which is 54 months or 4.5 years. The 12 extra months break down as 6 months waiting for three results (about two months each), 1 month for ICITSS, and 5 months of idle time before the next sitting (2 before Intermediate and 3 before Final). Advanced ICITSS (the Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills) and the four self-paced online modules fit in the 3 idle months before Final.

Registering after the Class 12 results, for example in June 2027, misses the 1 May 2027 cut-off for September 2027 and moves the first Foundation sitting to January 2028. In our model that follows the "Foundation missed twice" path in the table further down, with the Final passed in November 2031, six months after the January 2027 registration path.

A graduate who registers for Intermediate provisionally in the final year of graduation, on 1 December 2026, and holds the required marks by the exam sits in September 2027, since May 2027 needed registration by 1 September 2026. The result comes in about November 2027 and articleship starts in December 2027. Training ends in December 2029, the first possible Final is November 2030, and the result comes in about January 2031. That is 49 months from registration, or about 4.1 years, against 38 months of minimums.

Each year you start later moves every date by one year, because the sittings repeat annually. If ICAI changes the sitting months or the registration rules, the dates change.

How much time does a failed CA attempt add to the CA course?

In our model, any single miss moves the Final result by six months, from July 2031 to January 2032. A missed Foundation or Intermediate sitting costs four months at that stage, but the delay carries on to the next Final sitting, which comes only in May and November. Other start dates can give a four-month slip. The table repeats the model above with one level missed at a time:

CaseFoundation passedIntermediate passedArticleshipFinal passed
No missMay 2027May 2028Aug 2028 to Aug 2030May 2031
Foundation missed onceSep 2027Sep 2028Dec 2028 to Dec 2030Nov 2031
Foundation missed twiceJan 2028Jan 2029Apr 2029 to Apr 2031Nov 2031
Intermediate missed onceMay 2027Sep 2028Dec 2028 to Dec 2030Nov 2031
Intermediate missed twiceMay 2027Jan 2029Apr 2029 to Apr 2031Nov 2031
Final missed onceMay 2027May 2028Aug 2028 to Aug 2030Nov 2031

Each row is one scenario only, not a combination of misses. Every single miss ends in the same place, November 2031, which is six months after the no-miss finish. A four-month slip early on and an eight-month slip both land on the next Final sitting after the six-month wait, so the second early miss costs nothing more in this model.

The start of articleship carries the same weight. In the no-miss case, an articleship that starts by October 2028 keeps the May 2031 Final, and one that starts in December 2028 pushes it to November 2031. Our recommendation is to begin looking for an articleship firm while you wait for the Intermediate result, so that the search never costs you a Final sitting.

Pass rates show why a buffer is sensible. In the May 2026 CA Foundation exam, 20.09% of the 90,217 candidates who appeared passed. Across the last five Foundation sittings the rate ranged from 14.78% to 21.52%. We would plan on one miss rather than none.

Registration validity also limits how long you can keep trying. Foundation registration lasts four years from your first eligible attempt, with no revalidation. Intermediate lasts five years, with one five-year revalidation, and Final lasts ten years. Our page on CA Foundation attempts works out your four-year window.

How do you work out your own CA finish date?

Use the registration cut-offs to find your first sitting, then add the waits in order. These are the cut-offs, which we derived by applying ICAI's rule that registration must be at least 4 months (Foundation) or 8 months (Intermediate) before the first day of the exam month (ICAI regional council FAQ) to each sitting month.

A student's hands arrange markers along a paper planner on a desk beside a pen and a small calendar.
Placing each wait and exam sitting in order on a planner turns the cut-offs into your own finish date.
SittingFoundation: register on or beforeIntermediate: register on or before
January1 September of the previous year1 May of the previous year
May1 January1 September of the previous year
September1 May1 January

The worksheet has seven steps:

  1. 1
    Start date
Write your Foundation registration date (you need Class 10 passed) or your Intermediate registration date (a graduate with 55% in commerce or 60% in other subjects, or an Intermediate passer from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India or the Institute of Cost Accountants of India). Pass: you meet the entry condition for your route on that date, or hold a provisional registration in the final year of graduation. Fail: you do not yet meet it, so you cannot register.
  2. 2
    First sitting
Take the earliest January, May or September sitting whose cut-off in the table is on or after your registration date. Pass: your date is on or before the cut-off. Fail: move to the next sitting.
  3. 3
    Foundation route only
Add two months for the result, register for Intermediate, and repeat step 2 using the Intermediate column. Pass: you have passed Foundation before registering for Intermediate, and your date meets the Intermediate cut-off. Fail: Foundation is not yet passed, so you cannot register.
  4. 4
    Articleship start
Add one month to the Intermediate result for ICITSS and for finding a firm. Pass: both Intermediate groups are passed and ICITSS is completed before articleship begins. Fail: either is missing.
  5. 5
    Articleship end
Add 24 months. Pass: the end date is exactly 24 months after the start date and you plan no more than 12 leaves a year. Fail: either is not true.
  6. 6
    Final sitting
Add six months to the end date. Take the first May or November on or after that day. Pass: your training end date is on or before the first day of the exam month minus six months. Fail: move to the next sitting.
  7. 7
    Finish
Add two months for the result. Pass: Advanced ICITSS and the four self-paced online modules are both completed before you fill in the Final form. Fail: either is outstanding on that day.

To test a miss, move the level you fail to its next sitting, redo steps 2 to 7, and compare the Final month. Your own registration paperwork starts with CA Inter registration, and the articleship rules and stipend are in our CA articleship guide.

Can iProledge coach you for CA Foundation and CA Intermediate, and what do the fees cover?

Yes. We coach CA Foundation (₹25,000) and CA Intermediate (₹50,000) as of October 2026, in blended, live online and onsite formats, with recordings, study materials, practice questions and mock tests. Fees once paid are not refunded, so we ask every student to attend a free demo class and meet a career adviser at our academy before joining.

Our support covers doubt clearing, study planning and mentoring. For this timeline, study planning means choosing the sitting you will be ready for, not only the first one you are eligible for. Ashish Kumar passed CA Foundation at his first attempt with 296 out of 400 in the September 2025 window, and the result was announced on 3 November 2025.

Admission takes under 15 minutes. We take payment by UPI, net banking, cards, no-cost EMI (equated monthly instalments) and flexible payment plans. Our CA Foundation coaching fees page compares the full cost.

Frequently asked questions

Two years. Articleship was cut from three years to two for candidates registering under the new scheme.
In our model, yes. Any single miss, at Foundation, Intermediate or Final, moves the finish by six months, to the next Final sitting in November 2031. The slip at Foundation or Intermediate is four months, but Final sits only in May and November, so the delay carries through. Other start dates can give a four-month slip.
About 4.5 years in our model, counted from Foundation registration in January of the Class 12 year, with every exam cleared at the first sitting. The minimum on paper is 42 months (4 + 8 + 24 + 6). If you register after your Class 12 results instead, the first Foundation sitting moves to January 2028 and the Final result comes about six months later.
About 4.1 years in our model, counted from direct-entry Intermediate registration in the final year of graduation. The minimums are 38 months (8 + 24 + 6).
No. Practical training starts only after you pass both groups of Intermediate and complete the four-week ICITSS (ICAI regional council FAQ). Passing one group is not enough.
Yes, provisionally, through direct entry. You can sit the exam only after you finish graduation with the required marks and complete eight months from the provisional registration. The marksheet must be submitted within six months of the result.
Yes, but only as a provisional Foundation registration. You can sit the Foundation exam only after you have appeared in Class 12, so registering early does not bring the exam forward. The earliest sitting is May of your Class 12 year, and the timeline from there is the same as for a Class 12 entrant.
No. The minimum on paper is 42 months, which is 3.5 years, and it assumes no waiting between stages. Exams run in fixed months and registration closes months earlier, so a first-attempt journey in our model takes about 4.5 years from Foundation registration, or about 4.1 years for a graduate on direct entry.
