The short answer

Our coaching costs ₹1,30,000 for CMA India Intermediate and Final together and ₹60,000 to ₹80,000 for the US CMA, against an MBA fee of ₹26,00,000 at IIM Bangalore. The US CMA can be studied while you work, and IMA gives you three years to pass both parts. An MBA is a different qualification for people leaving finance.

Introduction

A Cost and Management Accountant (CMA India), a US Certified Management Accountant (US CMA) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) answer different questions. CMA India is awarded by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), and the US CMA through the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). Both qualify you to do management accounting: costing, budgeting, planning and performance analysis. An MBA is a general management degree, and what it is worth depends heavily on the institute that awards it.

Most graduates who search this are choosing between two ways of spending their next few years. One is a two-year campus programme with a very large fee, taken to widen their options. The other is months of study alongside a job, taken to deepen a finance career they have already picked.

This page puts CMA India, the US CMA and an MBA side by side and gives you a short chooser to run on your own situation. iProledge teaches both CMA routes; it does not teach an MBA.

Key takeaways

  • For a management accounting career, a CMA is the direct route. Our coaching costs ₹1,30,000 for CMA India Intermediate and Final together and ₹60,000 to ₹80,000 for the US CMA, against an MBA fee of ₹26,00,000 at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore. ICMAI and IMA charge their own fees on top of our coaching.
  • A graduate can enter ICMAI's Intermediate level directly. The US CMA needs a bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience, which can be completed after you pass.
  • The US CMA can be studied while you work. IMA gives you three years to pass both parts.
  • An MBA is a different qualification for people leaving finance.

Which is better for a management accounting career, a CMA or an MBA?

A CMA is better when the target is a management accounting role, because the whole qualification trains for it. An MBA is better when the target is a different function or general management. Here are the three routes at a glance, as of October 2026.

What does each route cost in rupees?

Our coaching costs ₹1,30,000 for CMA India Intermediate and Final together and ₹60,000 to ₹80,000 for the US CMA, set against an MBA fee of ₹26,00,000 at IIM Bangalore for the 2026–28 batch. ICMAI and IMA charge their own course, exam and membership fees on top of our coaching.

Our working: the CMA India figure assumes eight Final papers at our per-paper price of ₹10,000. Our CMA USA exam fee guide covers IMA's fees and what else to add.

An MBA also costs the pay you may not earn while on campus. For the fuller comparison, add your own monthly salary × 24 to the MBA fee.

How long does it take, and can you keep working?

IMA gives you up to three years to pass both US CMA parts, ICMAI requires at least four months of coaching for each group of papers in CMA India, and an MBA at IIM Bangalore is a two-year programme. You can keep working through a US CMA. Testing windows run January–February, May–June and September–October. The two years of experience can come before or within seven years of passing.

From the September/October 2026 testing window, the US CMA essay section is replaced by case-based questions in English-language exams, according to IMA.

ICMAI requires enrolment for coaching at least four months before the exam month. Our classes run as blended, live online or onsite, so you can fit them around work. For the US CMA we run weekday and weekend batches.

How do you choose between CMA India and the US CMA?

Match your situation to the row below, then confirm it with an adviser. If you want ICMAI's qualification, check who can enter CMA India.

If your target is outside finance, such as marketing, HR, operations or general management, an MBA is a different qualification for that.

This chooser is our recommendation, not a rule. For difficulty, see how hard the CMA exam is and the US CMA exam pattern; for pay, see CMA salary in India.

  • Rupee prices. CMA Foundation ₹22,000, Intermediate ₹50,000 and Final ₹10,000 per paper. CMA USA is ₹60,000 on the weekend batch and ₹80,000 on the weekday batch.
  • A batch that fits your week. Weekday and weekend US CMA batches, in blended, live online or onsite formats.
  • Try before you join. Try a free demo class and meet a Career Adviser before you join.
  • Support that answers fast. Calls are answered within 5 minutes, WhatsApp within 30 minutes and email within 24 hours. We also offer doubt clearing, study planning and mentoring.
  • Ways to pay. UPI, net banking, cards, no-cost EMI (equated monthly instalment) and flexible payment plans.
  • Recordings, study material and mock tests. These come with our courses.
  • A CMA at the helm. Our Founder and CEO, Naveen J, is a CMA, and we have trained over 16,000 students.

When does an MBA suit you better?

An MBA suits you better if you are leaving finance for marketing, HR, operations or general management, where a CMA's specialism does not help. It is a general management degree, and its value depends on the institute. We do not teach an MBA. In our view, a CMA first and an MBA later is a sensible order if you want both.

Our verdict

If you have picked management accounting, iProledge's CMA India and US CMA coaching gets you there for ₹1,30,000 or ₹60,000 to ₹80,000 and lets you keep working, against a ₹26,00,000 two-year MBA fee.

How we compared

We compared CMA India, the US CMA and an MBA, using IIM Bangalore's 2026–28 programme as the example, on entry rules, official fees, structure and time to complete. The ICMAI, IMA and IIM Bangalore pages listed below were current as of October 2026. We did not compare other institutes' MBA fees or programmes.

Frequently asked

A CMA is better if you want to work in management accounting, since the whole qualification trains for that work. An MBA covers a wider range of functions, so it suits other goals. The right choice follows the job you want, not which qualification sounds bigger.
Yes, you can sit the exams first. IMA requires a bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience, which can be completed before or within seven years of passing. You have three years to pass both parts, so a fresh graduate can start studying immediately.
Yes. A graduate with a degree from a recognised university can enrol directly at Intermediate, per ICMAI's eligibility rules, so you start at Intermediate instead of Foundation. Foundation is the first of ICMAI's three stages, followed by Intermediate and Final.
Yes. They are separate qualifications with separate entry rules, so you can take both in either order. The US CMA allows three years to pass both parts and seven years to complete the experience requirement, which you can plan around an MBA's two-year programme.
