What is a CMA USA exam pattern?
The CMA USA exam pattern is the official structure of each four-hour exam part: 100 multiple-choice questions followed, for most English exams from September/October 2026, by two case-based questions. Two parts, two official subject maps
Candidates must pass Part 1, Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics, and Part 2, Strategic Financial Management. IMA’s published topic weights differ across the two parts, so practice plans should use the corresponding syllabus map rather than a generic CMA question bank.
The MCQ section comes first
Each exam part has 100 MCQs. IMA requires at least 50% correct on that section before a candidate may enter the CBQ section. A small number of MCQs may be validated for future use and do not count in the final score.
The overall score decides the result
Candidates pass an exam part with a scaled score of at least 360 on IMA’s 0–500 score range. The MCQ gateway and the 360 passing standard answer different questions: one controls access to CBQs, while the other determines whether the exam part is passed.
The test runs in two sections

A scaled score is not a raw percentage
A score of 360 is the minimum passing scaled score on a 0–500 range for each exam part, according to the IMA Kochi Chapter’s CMA scoring guide. Dividing 360 by 500 and calling it 72% correct is inaccurate because IMA reports a scaled score, not a raw percentage of questions answered correctly.
CBQs test application, not essay length
Each CBQ starts with an approximately 250-word business case and can use drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank, select-from-a-list and calculation tasks. IMA awards points for correct answers, allows partial credit and applies no penalty for wrong answers. The 50% MCQ rule only opens the CBQ section. It does not mean the candidate has passed the exam part.
Match practice to the official map
Part 1 covers financial planning, performance and analytics. Part 2 covers strategic financial management. Use the CMA USA syllabus study map to organise practice by IMA’s published topic weights, rather than treating both parts as the same subject.
What the exam pattern cannot decide
The pattern can tell a candidate what will be tested and how the score gate works. The pattern cannot decide whether self-study, a test series or structured teaching suits that candidate’s schedule and knowledge gaps. Compare that decision separately, and use a provider-verification checklist before relying on a training provider’s claims.
