Introduction
A Company Secretary (CS) qualification costs about ₹1 lakh for its first two stages. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore costs ₹26 lakh. The qualification is awarded by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), and this page is for commerce students and graduates heading into governance, compliance and corporate-law work.
The two are priced in different units. One is counted in thousands of rupees and exam attempts. The other is counted in lakhs and two years without a salary. A fee you can pay from savings and a fee that needs a loan lead to different careers, and that often settles the question before the syllabus does.
This page gives you a cost worksheet, the pass rates you are betting against, and a five-test checklist to run before you pay anyone, including us.
CS here means Company Secretary, not computer science.
Key takeaways
- CS is the direct route for governance and compliance. The Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test (CSEET) plus CS Executive come to ₹1,02,900 with iProledge coaching and ICSI fees together.
- The exam pass rate is the risk. In June 2026, 17.41% passed Executive Group 1 and 22.19% passed Group 2.
- We recommend iProledge for CS coaching: our CSEET pass rate has stayed above 95% over the last three years, and a free demo class lets you test our teaching before you pay.
- Run the five tests below before you pay for either path. Each one has a clear pass or fail.
CS vs MBA: which is better for governance, compliance and corporate-law roles?
For governance, compliance and corporate-law roles, the CS route is the direct one. It teaches company law, compliance and governance from the first stage. An MBA suits you better when you want management, consulting or marketing, where no single professional licence is needed.
Our recommendation by target role:
CSEET is the Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test, the first stage of the CS route. If you later want to move into management, an MBA can follow CS. Doing it in that order protects you from paying MBA fees before you know you want management.
If you are weighing CS against another professional route, see CA vs CS: pass rates, fees and pay.

How much does the CS course cost compared with an MBA?
As of October 2026, our worksheet puts CSEET plus CS Executive at ₹1,02,900 with iProledge coaching and ICSI fees together. IIM Bangalore's two-year Post Graduate Programme (PGP) costs ₹26,00,000 including hostel and allied fees (2026–28 batch). That makes the MBA about 25 times the cost.
How we worked it out:
- We assume one CSEET sitting and one sitting of each of the two Executive groups, at ₹1,500 per group.
- Our model for Professional: (₹10,000 × number of papers) + ₹20,000 ICSI fees + (₹1,800 × groups sat). Sitting both groups once, the ICSI part is ₹20,000 + 2 × ₹1,800 = ₹23,600.
- Before Professional coaching, the whole route is ₹1,02,900 + ₹23,600 = ₹1,26,500, and each Professional paper adds ₹10,000.
- All totals are our model, not official fees.
Graduates can skip CSEET. Graduates can enter Executive directly by paying a ₹5,000 CSEET exemption fee, which makes ICSI's Executive total ₹23,900. Our arithmetic: ₹23,900 + ₹3,000 exam fees + ₹50,000 coaching = ₹76,900. Confirm your eligibility with ICSI before relying on this.
What each route leaves out: the CS route adds 21 months of practical training after Executive, and the MBA adds two years without a salary. Multiply your expected annual pay by two and add it to the MBA column. Fees at other colleges vary widely, so check each college's own fee page.

What are the real odds of clearing the CS exams?
In June 2026, 17.41% of candidates passed CS Executive Group 1 and 22.19% passed Group 2 (ICSI results, declared 25 August 2026). Professional was 32.69% for Group 1 and 29.49% for Group 2. This is one exam session, so treat it as a guide, not a forecast.
What a failed attempt costs in ICSI fees is small: ₹1,500 per Executive group and ₹1,800 per Professional group. The larger cost is months of study time. Our recommendation is to budget for a second attempt on at least one Executive group and plan your calendar around it, rather than hoping for a first-time pass.
For the group-by-group pattern and how to check your marks, see our CS Executive pass percentage page.

Which path passes these five tests?
Run these five tests before paying for CS coaching or an MBA application. Each has a pass and a fail. The thresholds are our recommendation.
- Role test. Open 10 current postings for the job you want. Pass for CS: at least 5 name Company Secretary or ICSI membership as required or preferred. Fail: fewer than 5, so lean towards an MBA or another route.
- Budget test. Add up your route using the worksheet above. Pass: you can fund it without borrowing against your future salary. Fail: you would need a loan, so look hard at the cheaper route.
- Time test. Pass for an MBA: you can go two years without income. Fail: you cannot, which rules out a full-time MBA.
- Attempt test. Pass for CS: you have planned for a second attempt at one Executive group in your budget and calendar. Fail: your plan only works if you clear every group first time.
- Entry test. If you are a graduate, check whether ICSI lets you enter Executive directly. Pass: you can, and the route drops to ₹76,900 in our worksheet. Fail: you start at CSEET and the total is ₹1,02,900.
As of October 2026, after passing Executive you complete a one-month Executive Development Programme (EDP) and then 21 months of practical training. Check the stipend and current rules on ICSI's training guidelines. Our CS articleship stipend tool helps you work out the stipend total and finish date.
When does an MBA suit you better than CS?
An MBA suits you better in three narrow cases:
- Your target is management, consulting or marketing. CS trains you for compliance and governance. An MBA is built for those roles.
- You want a top campus's recruitment network. That covers one top institute and is not typical of all MBAs.
- You already hold CS and now want a management move. In that case the MBA follows CS, not replaces it.
For pay on the CS side, Glassdoor's self-reported data shows an average of ₹7.7 lakh for a Company Secretary in India, with a middle range of ₹6.25 to ₹12.5 lakh. These are not like-for-like with an IIM figure. Our company secretary salary statistics go deeper.
Our verdict
For commerce students and graduates heading into governance, compliance and corporate-law work, iProledge's CS coaching is the direct and far cheaper route.
