The short answer

Scope and fee favour the enrolled agent route for a commerce graduate or a CA, CMA or ACCA student who wants a US tax career: it is the shorter exam, the smaller fee bill, and the credential built around tax. The EA exam and enrolment fees come to $1,091, while the CPA's India administration fee alone is $1,840. The CPA covers audit, financial reporting and a state licence, which the EA does not.

Introduction

Both credentials let you represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) without limits, so representation does not separate them. What separates them is what else you can do, what each costs, and whether you can sit the exam from India.

An enrolled agent (EA) is a tax professional licensed by the IRS, who passes three exam parts. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is licensed by a US state board of accountancy, and a candidate sits four exam sections.

We coach EA candidates in Bengaluru and online, so we have a view. The sections below set out scope and fees first, then whether you can book an exam from India today, then how we coach the EA, with the working shown for every rupee figure. Fees and rules come from the IRS and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), which supports the state boards and runs the international CPA Exam administration, as of 25 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Start with the enrolled agent route if your goal is US tax work: it is three exam parts and $1,091 in exam and enrolment fees (as of October 2026).
  • The CPA exam's India administration fee alone is $1,840 for four sections (NASBA, as of October 2026), before section and application fees. The EA's exam and enrolment fees total $1,091.
  • As of 25 October 2026 the IRS has not set a date for international EA exam scheduling, so study now and book only when scheduling opens.
  • The CPA covers audit, financial reporting and a state licence, which the EA does not. If you need those, the CPA is a separate path.

Which is better for a candidate in India, the enrolled agent or the CPA?

Scope and fee favour the enrolled agent route for a commerce graduate or a CA, CMA or ACCA student who wants a US tax career: it is the shorter exam, the smaller fee bill, and the credential built around tax. The tables above show how the two compare on the points buyers check first. iProledge coaches the Enrolled Agent route.

What does the CPA cover that an enrolled agent does not?

The CPA covers audit, financial reporting and a state licence, which the EA does not. If you need those, the CPA is a separate path. If your goal is US tax work, the EA is the direct route.

  • Audit and financial reporting work. NASBA lists auditing and attestation (assurance work on financial information), financial accounting and reporting, and regulation among the CPA Exam sections. The EA exam covers individuals, businesses, and representation, practices and procedures.
  • A state-board licence. The CPA credential comes from a US state board of accountancy, not the IRS. If a US employer or your own plans require a state licence, the EA does not replace it.

What does each credential cost an Indian candidate in rupees?

The EA exam and enrolment fees come to $1,091, about ₹1.04 lakh. The CPA's India administration fee alone is $1,840, about ₹1.75 lakh, before the section and application fees a state board and NASBA also charge. These are our own calculations from the fees the IRS and NASBA publish, converted at a round ₹95 to the dollar, which is our assumption. Replace it with the rate on the day you pay.

We use four CPA sections, the number a candidate sits under the current exam structure; NASBA lists six sections in all. The CPA figure is a floor, not a full cost, because state boards set their own other fees. Fees change, so check the IRS and NASBA pages before you pay.

Three things to add to your own sum:

  • Retakes. Each extra EA attempt costs another $317, and the fee is non-refundable and non-transferable once paid at scheduling.
  • The CPA's other fees. The $460 sits on top of the section and application fees; NASBA says candidates pay international fees in addition.
  • Coaching and study material. For the EA, ask us for the current fee. For how the IRS fee total is built up, see Enrolled Agent exam fees in India.

The exam fee is paid when you book, not when you start studying.

Can you sit the enrolled agent exam from India today?

No: as of 25 October 2026, the IRS says scheduling and testing for international candidates is delayed and a new start date has not been determined. When it opens, international testing will be remote-proctored only, with no in-person centres outside the United States.

Here is what is fixed:

  • PSI Services, the testing company, replaced Prometric, the previous one, as the exam administrator on 1 March 2026, according to the IRS enrolled agent news page.
  • The domestic testing window runs from 1 July 2026 to 28 February 2027.
  • Candidates whose exam parts are about to expire get extra time because of the delay, according to the IRS.
  • Part scores carry over for three years.

What we recommend: start studying now and check the IRS enrolled agent page before you pay for anything that depends on a date. When scheduling opens, our Enrolled Agent exam dates page is where we track it. The CPA does not have this problem, but it needs eligibility through a US state board first. Four jurisdictions (Alabama, Idaho, North Carolina and the Virgin Islands) do not support international administration. NASBA also requires a valid passport or national ID card at the exam.

How do the two credentials differ in what you can do?

Both let you represent a taxpayer before the IRS without limits on whom or what, so tax work is open to either. The IRS lists enrolled agents, CPAs and attorneys as the three groups with unlimited representation rights.

The difference is breadth and who licenses you. An EA's path is built entirely around federal tax: 100 questions per part (85 scored) in 3.5 hours, across individuals, businesses, and representation, practices and procedures. The pass mark is 500 on the IRS's scaled score. The CPA Exam spreads across six listed sections, so the credential reaches into auditing and financial reporting too.

Our view for Indian candidates: if US tax compliance, review or IRS representation is the job you want, the EA reaches it with fewer exams and a smaller fee bill. If you want to widen beyond tax, plan for the CPA. For pay, see Enrolled Agent salary in India.

When should you choose our Enrolled Agent coaching?

Choose us if you want the EA credential and prefer structured coaching to self-study. These are the five reasons, each tied to a fact.

  1. The fee bill is small, so coaching fits. The IRS charges $317 per part and $140 to enrol, so $1,091 in total. Spending on coaching is far easier to justify next to that than next to a credential with a $1,840 India surcharge before any other fee.
  2. You can prepare now. Our programme runs 6 to 9 months for all three parts. The IRS has set no new international date, so you can prepare now and book when scheduling opens. Part scores stay valid for three years.
  3. You choose how to attend. We teach in classrooms at our Jayanagar and Malleshwaram centres, live online across India, and with recorded access to every session.
  4. Preparation is built into the course. You get study materials, chapter-wise mock tests, full-length simulated exams, doubt-clearing sessions, one-on-one mentoring and PTIN registration guidance. The IRS allows four attempts per part per testing window, and each attempt costs another $317, so practising before you book matters.
  5. You can try before you commit. We run free demo classes, our call line responds in 5 minutes, and we have trained 16,000+ learners since 2015 across CA, CS, CMA and ACCA courses. Payment is by UPI, net banking, cards, NCEMI (no-cost EMI, or equated monthly instalment) or flexible payment plans. Résumé and interview help are part of learner support.

Our Enrolled Agent course in India guide lists six checks to run on any provider, and the programme itself is on our Enrolled Agent course page.

Our verdict

iProledge's Enrolled Agent route suits Indian candidates who want US tax work, because it needs three exam parts and $1,091 in fees against a CPA India administration fee of $1,840 alone.

How we compared

We compared the enrolled agent and CPA on scope, exam fees, and whether candidates can sit the exam from India, using fees and rules published by the IRS and NASBA as of 25 October 2026. Rupee figures are our own calculations at an assumed ₹95 to the dollar.

Frequently asked

No, not as of 25 October 2026. The IRS says scheduling and testing for international candidates is delayed and a new start date has not been determined. When it opens, international testing will be remote-proctored only. Check the IRS enrolled agent FAQ for the current status before you plan around a date.
Yes for IRS representation: enrolled agents, CPAs and attorneys are the three groups with unlimited representation rights before the IRS. They differ in who licenses you, since the IRS licenses enrolled agents and a state board licenses CPAs, and in scope, because the CPA also reaches into auditing and financial reporting.
No. The IRS does not require a degree to become an enrolled agent. You get a PTIN, pass all three exam parts, apply for enrolment on Form 23, and pass a suitability check covering tax compliance and criminal background. The CPA needs a state board to accept your accounting education, which Indian candidates must have evaluated.
Start with the EA if you want US tax work, because it reaches that job with fewer exams and a smaller fee bill. Plan for the CPA if you want audit work, financial reporting or a state licence, which the EA does not provide. This is our recommendation, not an IRS rule.
About ₹1.04 lakh for the IRS exam and enrolment fees: three parts at $317 each is $951, plus a $140 enrolment fee, so $1,091 in total, at an assumed ₹95 to the dollar. Retaking a part costs another $317, and the fee is non-refundable once paid at scheduling.
