Enrolled Agent Salary in India: Pay Data and Exam Status

Enrolled agent salary in India averages ₹5 lakh (₹500,000) a year in Payscale's January 2026 self-reported data, and the US tax authority has delayed international exam testing with no new date set.

Key takeaways

  1. 01
Payscale's entry-level average is ₹488,125 (about ₹4.9 lakh) from only 13 self-reported salaries, so it is a rough guide for a fresher, not a standard offer.
  2. 02
Whether the EA adds pay is unproven: Payscale does not compare holders with non-holders, and pay barely moves between its first two experience bands.
  3. 03
As of 27 August 2026, the IRS has set no new date for international testing. Official fees total $1,091 (3 × $317 plus $140).
  4. 04
Get any EA premium in writing before you pay. At an assumed ₹60,000 a year premium, our worked example takes about 29 months to recover the outlay.

The same salary site gives three different pay figures for an enrolled agent in India, depending on whether you read the job-title page, the entry level or the certification holders. A fresher who picks one is choosing a sample, not a fact.

An enrolled agent (EA) is a tax practitioner who has earned the right to represent taxpayers before the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), as the IRS explains. The fresher number that matters most is Payscale's entry-level average of ₹488,125, built from only 13 self-reported salaries in January 2026. Treat it as a rough guide, not a standard offer.

A second problem sits outside any salary table. Candidates in India cannot currently book the exam, so coaching paid for today buys a wait, not a pass. Pay also barely moves between the first two experience bands, so any premium for the credential is something to get in writing, not something to assume.

What is the enrolled agent salary in India for a fresher?

Payscale's entry-level average is ₹488,125 (about ₹4.9 lakh) from only 13 self-reported salaries, so treat it as a rough guide, not a standard offer. One lakh is ₹100,000, so that is about ₹40,700 a month (our arithmetic: ₹488,125 ÷ 12).

Here is the full picture from Payscale's India page for the Enrolled Agent job title, 53 self-reported profiles, updated 28 January 2026:

MeasureFigure
Average, all levels₹500,079
Base pay, lowest to highest₹302,000 to ₹1,000,000
Total pay including bonus, lowest to highest₹303,000 to ₹1,000,000
Entry level (under 1 year of experience; 13 salaries)₹488,125
Early career (1 to 4 years; 17 salaries)₹488,730
Mid career21% above early career (about ₹5.9 lakh, our arithmetic: ₹488,730 × 1.21)

Of the 53 profiles, 30 are entry or early career (13 + 17), about 57%. The all-levels average is therefore a junior average. Payscale publishes no separate senior average.

Does the enrolled agent credential raise your salary in India?

The data cannot show it either way. Payscale does not compare people with and without the EA credential, so any pay premium is unproven.

People who list the EA certification average ₹600,000 (67 profiles, June 2026), against ₹500,079 for the EA job title (53 profiles, January 2026). Those are different samples. The ₹99,921 gap, roughly 20% (our arithmetic: ₹99,921 ÷ ₹500,079), is not a measured credential premium.

Payscale's experience bands tell a related story. Early-career pay (1 to 4 years) is ₹605 a year above entry-level pay (under 1 year), a gap of 0.12% (our arithmetic: ₹605 ÷ ₹488,125). Pay barely moves between the first two bands. The rise comes at mid career.

On the certification page, Payscale lists EY at ₹32.3 lakh and Deloitte Tax Services India at ₹19.6 lakh, but does not show how many profiles sit behind each line. The page's total is 67, so each line is small. Do not read an employer line as a pay scale.

Our recommendation: if a fresher is quoted above ₹10 lakh, the highest total pay in Payscale's job-title data, ask for the offer letter before believing it. In our view, pay at that level goes to people with years of preparing and reviewing US returns.

Can you take the enrolled agent exam from India in 2026?

No. As of 27 August 2026, the IRS says scheduling and testing for international candidates is temporarily delayed and no new start date has been set. Testing had been planned for 2 September 2026.

Testing for candidates in India is on hold, so exam plans have to wait on the IRS.

The IRS enrolled agent FAQ sets out the rules for candidates in India:

  • International testing will only be available remotely with a proctor, a person who supervises you online. There is no in-person international testing.
  • The Special Enrollment Examination (SEE) runs from 1 May to the end of February, with a blackout in March and April.
  • The carryover period is the three years in which you must pass all three parts; a part passed earlier expires after that. For international candidates whose parts expire after 1 May 2026, the IRS extends the period until international testing resumes.

As of 27 August 2026 the IRS has not set a restart date, so do not pay for coaching that cannot be refunded or paused until international testing reopens.

How much does the EA credential cost in rupees, and when does it pay back?

Official fees total $1,091 (3 × $317 plus $140), about ₹1.06 lakh at an assumed ₹97 per dollar, before study costs. The IRS FAQ sets the fees: $317 per part is paid when you book each exam, and the $140 enrolment fee is paid when you apply for enrolment after passing. The assumed rate is close to the about ₹96.8 per dollar quoted on 10 October 2026; it moves daily.

The exam fees come in separate instalments, so the cost builds up part by part.
  1. 1

    Outlay in rupees

Outlay in rupees = ($1,091 × the rupee rate on the day you pay) + your study cost.
  2. 2

    Monthly uplift

Monthly uplift = (annual CTC with the EA − annual CTC without it) ÷ 12. CTC is cost to company, the total annual package.
  3. 3

    Payback in months

Payback in months = outlay ÷ monthly uplift.

Worked example (our model, with assumed inputs, not market data): at ₹97 per dollar, $1,091 is ₹105,827. Add an assumed study cost of ₹40,000 for an outlay of ₹145,827. With an assumed premium of ₹60,000 a year (₹5,000 a month), payback is 145,827 ÷ 5,000, about 29 months. Put your own rate, study cost and written premium into the formula. If an employer will not state a premium, the uplift is zero and the payback never arrives.

Which seven checks show an enrolled agent job offer and exam plan are worth taking?

An offer passes when it puts the credential's value in writing. Run these tests; renegotiate or walk away on any fail. They are our recommendation, not an official standard.

#TestPassFail
1Does the job description name the EA?EA is listed as required, or tied to a pay bandOnly "US tax knowledge"
2Is the EA premium in writing?Offer letter states the rupee difference, or the increment on passingVerbal promise
3Is the work named? In writing: the return type you will prepare (for example individual returns) and the named role of the person who reviews itEither is missing
4Is the pay split shown?Fixed and variable pay on separate linesHeadline CTC only
5Is the pay level credible?Total pay between ₹3.03 lakh and ₹10 lakh, and you can name the gap to the ₹4.9 lakh entry averageBelow ₹3.03 lakh, or above ₹10 lakh without written reasons
6Are hours in writing?Shift hours and tax-season overtime terms are written down"As per business need"
7Can you actually sit the exam? The IRS page shows international testing open, and a booking falls between May and FebruaryTesting delayed or in blackout while you have paid non-refundable coaching

Our view: take US tax return work first, then sit the exam once testing opens and an employer has written down what the credential is worth.

Official fees are $1,091 (3 × $317 plus $140), about ₹1.06 lakh at an assumed ₹97 per dollar. That excludes study costs and exchange-rate changes. The fees are set by the IRS.

It is a rough guide. Payscale's job-title page rests on 53 self-reported profiles, only 13 of them entry level, so one or two salaries can move a figure. Use it as a range to test offers against.

Payscale's city pages are too old and too small to show a reliable difference. Its Hyderabad page (last updated August 2023) shows about ₹490,000 and its Mumbai page (July 2024) about ₹475,000. Employer lines rest on tiny samples too.

Each part is a 100-question, 3.5-hour test, and 85 questions are scored (15 are experimental). The demand is passing all three parts, Individuals, Businesses, and Representation, Practices and Procedures, within the three-year carryover period.
Only if the job description says so. An employer decides whether to require the credential or pay extra for it. Ask for the requirement and any pay difference in writing, which is checks 1 and 2 in the table above.
