ACCA vs CFA: Which Is Better for Indian Commerce Graduates?
ACCA vs CFA comes down to your target job: ACCA suits reporting, audit and finance roles, while CFA suits investment roles. Choose by the job you want, not the brand.
By Naveen J D, Founder · Updated 28 Oct 2026

Key takeaways
- Choose ACCA for reporting, audit and finance roles and CFA for investment roles such as equity research and portfolio management; neither is better outright.
- Neither is easy: ACCA papers (single exams) passed at 38% to 87% in December 2025 and CFA Level I passed 43% in November 2025, and the workload differs in shape.
- On exam fees alone, ACCA is an estimated ₹1.83 lakh if your degree earns five exemptions, against ₹3.35 to ₹4.35 lakh for CFA's three exams. Add ACCA's registration, subscription, Ethics module and exemption fees and the all-in ACCA total is about ₹3.11 lakh (27 October 2026 rates).
- Many B.Com graduates earn three to five ACCA exemptions. You can hold both qualifications, but take them in sequence.

ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) sit side by side in most finance-course lists, yet a student who passes one has studied only part of what the other tests. ACCA teaches you to prepare, audit and manage a company's accounts. CFA teaches you to value investments and manage money.
That is why a B.Com (Bachelor of Commerce) graduate asking which to start is really asking which job they want in five years. Name the job first and the qualification follows. Pick the qualification first and you risk spending years on the wrong syllabus.
This page compares the two on career target, study hours, exam fees in rupees and the ACCA exemptions a B.Com degree can earn. An exemption is an exam ACCA waives because your earlier study already covered it. It includes a decision table by profile.
iProledge coaches ACCA students and publishes this page, so every fee and pass rate below comes from ACCA or the CFA Institute, with its date.
ACCA or CFA: Which Is Better? The Two Compared at a Glance
Neither is better outright; the better one matches your target job. ACCA fits reporting, audit and finance roles, and CFA fits investment roles such as equity research and portfolio management. The table compares the points that decide the choice, as of October 2026.
| Point | ACCA | CFA |
|---|---|---|
| Awarding body | Association of Chartered Certified Accountants | CFA Institute |
| Focus | Accounting, audit, tax, reporting, financial management | Investment analysis, valuation, portfolio management |
| Structure | 13 exams in three levels, plus an Ethics module (the current structure; ACCA is introducing a redesigned one from 2027) | Three levels, three exams |
| Entry requirements | Set by your prior qualification; the exemptions calculator shows what your degree earns | Bachelor's degree, or Level I sat up to 23 months before your graduation month (or 4,000 hours of work and/or study experience) |
| Experience requirement | 36 months and nine performance objectives | 4,000 hours over at least 36 months, for the charter (the CFA title) |
| Time | Depends on the papers you sit after exemptions; ACCA sets no study hours | Typically three to four years |
| Exam fees | £151 to £268 per session-based paper on ACCA's India schedule (December 2026) | USD 3,520 to 4,570 for all three |
| Best for | Reporting, audit, finance roles | Investment roles |
ACCA in Brief
ACCA's qualification currently has 13 exams across three levels: Applied Knowledge (three exams), Applied Skills (six) and Strategic Professional (four: two compulsory, two options you choose), plus an Ethics and Professional Skills module. Members also need 36 months of relevant experience and nine performance objectives (workplace skills your employer signs off), which you can gain before, during or after the exams. A paper is one exam.
ACCA is redesigning the qualification. Its page on the future qualification describes three levels, Knowledge, Expertise and Strategic Professional, with a Foundations route for students who do not meet the entry criteria.
The redesigned qualification has three Knowledge, five Expertise and three Strategic Professional exams, plus employability modules. Foundations and Knowledge exams start in July 2027, and Expertise and Strategic Professional exams in September 2027. If you start now, read ACCA's transition guidance before you plan around the 13-exam structure and the paper counts below.
CFA in Brief
The CFA Program has three levels and three exams, with about 300 recommended study hours per level. The charter is the CFA title awarded after passing all three exams and completing the experience: 4,000 hours of relevant work over at least 36 months. Under the CFA Institute's eligibility rules, you need a bachelor's degree or must sit Level I up to 23 months before your graduation month, so a final-year B.Com student can plan the timing. Our guide to what CFA covers explains each level.
Which Jobs Does ACCA Lead To, and Which Does CFA?
ACCA leads mainly to reporting, audit, tax and finance roles in companies and accounting firms. CFA leads mainly to investment roles in research, portfolio management and asset management. Investment banking and corporate finance sit between the two, so the job description decides.
Roles ACCA leads to
ACCA's papers map onto financial reporting, audit and assurance, tax, management accounting and financial management. The four Strategic Professional options (Advanced Financial Management, Advanced Audit and Assurance, Advanced Taxation, Advanced Performance Management) let you lean towards one. In our view, audit teams hire most directly on accounting qualifications, so check each posting's stated requirements.
Roles CFA leads to
CFA's syllabus centres on valuing securities and managing portfolios, so it points to equity research, portfolio management and investment analysis. The CFA Institute counts experience only when the work involves or informs investment decisions, so the charter matters most where the job is about those decisions.
Where they overlap
Investment banking and corporate finance use both skill sets: financial statements from the ACCA side, valuation and markets from the CFA side. Our recommendation: if the role names financial statements, audit or tax, lean ACCA. If it names valuation, research or portfolios, lean CFA.

Is ACCA Easier Than CFA? Study Hours, Pass Rates and Workload
Neither is easy, and ACCA is not simply the easier one. ACCA spreads effort across many papers in several subjects, while CFA concentrates it in three long exams on investments, and a CFA candidate must pass those three levels in turn. The sittings below show how pass rates vary.
In December 2025, ACCA pass rates ran from 87% in Business and Technology to 38% in Advanced Audit and Assurance, and the six Strategic Professional papers passed between 38% and 50%. CFA Level I passed 43% of 26,752 candidates in November 2025. These are single sittings, and Level I is one of the three CFA levels.
Our worked example assumes your degree earns five exemptions, leaving eight papers: Financial Reporting (51%), Performance Management (40%), Financial Management (48%), Audit and Assurance (46%), Strategic Business Leader (50%), Strategic Business Reporting (48%), Advanced Financial Management (45%) and Advanced Audit and Assurance (38%). Their simple average is 366 ÷ 8 = 45.75%. That is our arithmetic on published rates, not your chance of passing.
Hours are estimates. The CFA Institute recommends about 300 study hours per level, so about 900 across three levels (3 × 300). ACCA sets no required hours: its study guide for Advanced Audit and Assurance says it does not prescribe or recommend any number of learning hours, so there is no official ACCA total to set against the CFA figure.
What you can count is papers: with five exemptions you sit eight ACCA papers, each with its own pass rate. Ask your tuition provider how many hours it plans per paper before you compare the two routes on time.
ACCA vs CFA Fees in India: What Each Costs in Rupees
On exam fees alone, ACCA costs an estimated ₹1.83 lakh if your degree earns five exemptions, and CFA costs ₹3.35 to ₹4.35 lakh for its three exams, as of October 2026. Add ACCA's registration, annual subscription, Ethics module and exemption fees and the all-in ACCA total is about ₹3.11 lakh, which puts the two routes closer than the exam fees alone suggest. ACCA charges in pounds and the CFA Institute in US dollars, so rupee figures move with the exchange rate.
| Exam fees | ACCA (India fee schedule) | CFA |
|---|---|---|
| Currency charged | Pounds (£) | US dollars (USD) |
| One exam | £151 to £268 (about ₹19,144 to ₹33,977) | From USD 1,140, the lowest single-exam fee (about ₹1.08 lakh) |
| Whole route | Eight papers if your degree earns five exemptions: £1,445 (about ₹1.83 lakh) | Three exams: USD 3,520 to 4,570 in total, by registration window (about ₹3.35 to ₹4.35 lakh) |
| Paid on top | Registration £30 (about ₹3,803), annual subscription £140 a year in 2026 (about ₹17,749), Ethics module £83 (about ₹10,523); exemption fees of £84 per Applied Knowledge paper and £111 per Applied Skills paper (£474 for five exemptions, about ₹60,094); any resit | Any exam you retake |
| All-in estimate | About £2,452 (about ₹3.11 lakh) with five exemptions over three years | USD 3,520 to 4,570 (about ₹3.35 to ₹4.35 lakh); learning materials are included in the CFA Institute's registration fee; a retake costs a further registration fee |
How we got the ACCA figure: four Applied Skills papers £151 each (£604), Strategic Business Leader £268, Strategic Business Reporting £191, two options £191 each (£382). So £604 + £268 + £191 + £382 = £1,445.
These are ACCA's India fees as of 28 October 2026 for the December 2026 standard entry; later sessions may differ, and late entry costs more.
The all-in figure adds registration (£30), three annual subscriptions of £140 (£420, assuming you take three years), the Ethics module (£83) and five exemption fees (three Applied Knowledge at £84 and two Applied Skills at £111, £474): £1,445 + £30 + £420 + £83 + £474 = £2,452. ACCA's annual subscription recurs every year you remain registered.
CFA figures come from the CFA Institute's programme page: USD 1,140 is the lowest single-exam fee, and USD 3,520 to 4,570 is its own total for the three exams by registration window. Rupee amounts use European Central Bank reference rates for 27 October 2026 (£1 = ₹126.78, USD 1 = ₹95.12) and are estimates. Our ACCA fee breakdown covers the extras.
Tuition is separate from exam fees. It applies only if you choose a coaching provider; self-study students pay exam fees only.
ACCA vs CFA After B.Com: How Many ACCA Exemptions Do You Get?
Many B.Com graduates receive between three and five ACCA exemptions, depending on the university and its syllabus. Nine is the ceiling, reached by other routes such as a qualified CA or an integrated B.Com plus ACCA programme. It is not the usual B.Com result.
ACCA awards exemptions only across the nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers, never for Strategic Professional, and charges a fee for each one. Every exemption you earn cuts both your study hours and your exam fees, so find your number before you budget. Enter your degree in ACCA's exemptions calculator for the official result, and read how to check your ACCA exemptions step by step. For a plain-English explanation of what exemptions can and cannot remove, see what ACCA exemptions mean. CFA works differently: candidates sit all three levels.
ACCA vs CFA Salary in India: What Decides Your Pay
Role, employer, city and years of experience decide pay more than the qualification's name, and published salary ranges for both ACCA and CFA vary widely between sources. We therefore give no single figure, only what two published comparisons say, so you can see both the pattern and the disagreement.
| Published source | Column | CFA, entry level in India |
|---|---|---|
| QuintEdge | ₹5–9 LPA | ₹7–12 LPA |
Learnsignal, updated 25 October 2026 | ₹4–8 LPA | ₹6–12 LPA |
Both are tuition providers' estimates, not salary surveys, and neither shows its method. They agree on the direction, with CFA entry pay above ACCA's, but the ranges overlap, so treat them as a guide, not a promise. Learnsignal also describes ACCA as common in Big 4 firms, multinational companies, banks and shared service centres, and CFA as common in investment banks, hedge funds, asset management and private equity.
Run this test before you commit. Collect ten current postings in your city for the exact job you want. Note whether each asks for ACCA, CFA, either or neither. Pass: most postings name one qualification, and that is your answer. Fail: most name neither, so experience matters more than the choice. If postings split roughly evenly or accept either, treat it as a pass for both: pick the one whose syllabus fits the work you want. For pay by role, read ACCA pay by role.
Can I Do ACCA and CFA Together? A Suggested Sequence
Yes, you can hold both, but studying for both at once puts two workloads into one week. We recommend a sequence:
- Name your first target job and start the matching qualification, one exam at a time.
- Add the second qualification once the first is under way and your weekly hours are steady.
- Check each body's experience rule. Work in an overlap role such as corporate finance may count towards both, but each body decides.

Which Is Better for You? A Decision Table for ACCA or CFA
Pick the row that matches you, then complete the first step. Each has a pass test.
| Your profile | Lean towards | First step |
|---|---|---|
| You want reporting, audit or finance roles | ACCA | Run ACCA's exemptions calculator on your degree. Pass: you get a paper count to budget with. |
| You want investment roles such as equity research | CFA | Check Level I timing against your graduation month in the CFA eligibility rules. Pass: the exam window you pick is no more than 23 months before your graduation month. |
| You are unsure | Decide the job first | Run the ten-postings test above. Pass: one qualification appears in most. If you are also weighing the Indian CA route, read our ACCA vs CA comparison. |
| You are working while studying | Whichever matches your job | Count the weekly hours you can protect for a year. At 10 hours a week, one CFA level (300 hours, the CFA Institute's recommendation) takes 30 weeks, about seven months. ACCA sets no study hours, so ask your tuition provider for its planned hours per paper and divide by your weekly hours the same way. |

Which Qualification Should a B.Com Graduate Choose: ACCA or CFA?
ACCA vs CFA is a decision about work, not prestige. If your target is reporting, audit or finance, ACCA gives you a structured route, and your B.Com may shorten it through exemptions you can check today. If your target is investment research or portfolio management, CFA is built for it, and Level I timing can start before you graduate.
Judge each route by the hours and sittings you can protect, not by headline difficulty. If you are still unsure, run the ten-postings test, then use the decision table. When ACCA is your answer, start with the exemptions calculator.
