ACCA Full Form: What It Means and Why It Isn't "CA"

ACCA full form is Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, a UK body founded in 1904. Members are not Indian Chartered Accountants; qualifying takes 13 exams plus 36 months of experience.

Key takeaways

  • ACCA stands for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. It is a professional body, not a university, and its qualification needs 13 exams, an ethics module and 36 months of relevant experience.
  • In India, "Chartered Accountant" is a designation reserved for ICAI members. After ACCA you write ACCA, or FCCA as a fellow, never "CA".
  • ACCA pass rates across the March, June and September 2026 sittings ranged from 39% to 55% on the 11 Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams reported in all three, so budget for resits on the lower-scoring papers.
  • ACCA's fees page set to India lists lower exam entry fees than its default page, so check the page for your own country before you budget.

The expansion takes a few seconds to read and still leaves the question that matters. "Chartered" sits in the middle of the name, and in India that word has a fixed owner: ICAI, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

ACCA is a different qualification from a different body, with its own title, its own exams and its own route to membership. Settling that early prevents a wrong course choice later, and it decides what you write on your CV.

Below, each word of the name is decoded and the titles you hold at each stage are laid out. The 2026 pass rates, ACCA's published exam fees and what FCCA (Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) means follow.

What is the full form of ACCA?

ACCA stands for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. It is a global professional accountancy body founded in 1904 that, as of November 2026, lists over 266,100 members and 546,500 future members in 179 countries. It received its Royal Charter in 1974, according to ACCA's India site.

ACCA is a body you register with. You sit its exams, log your work experience with it and join it as a member. A degree from a university works differently. You do not graduate from ACCA; you qualify through it.

Is ACCA the same as CA in India?

No. "Chartered Accountant" is a designation reserved for ICAI members: the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 bars non-members from using the title under Section 24, and ICAI's notice on designations confirms that only its members may use it. ACCA members use different letters: ACCA once qualified, and FCCA as a fellow.

The word "Chartered" in ACCA's name comes from a UK Royal Charter. It gives no right to ICAI's title. Read the name one word at a time:

Word in the nameWhat it tells you
AssociationACCA is a membership body that sets exams and admits members. It is not a university.
CharteredACCA holds a UK Royal Charter, granted in 1974. That is separate from ICAI's designation.
CertifiedCertified marks the title as ACCA's own and separate from ICAI's Chartered Accountant.
AccountantsThe profession the qualification trains you for.

Our advice is to plan around the route that matches where you want to work. If your goal is practice under the CA title in India, the CA route is the one to plan around. If you want an internationally portable qualification, ACCA is the one to compare, and our guide to ACCA jobs in India covers who hires ACCA students. For any task that depends on the CA title itself, check the specific rule with ICAI before you commit.

What can you call yourself at each stage of ACCA?

You are a registered student first, an affiliate once your exams are done, an ACCA member once the experience requirement is met, and a fellow, with the letters FCCA, after continuous membership. Here is the sequence:

A young professional climbs a staircase of four steps, each one a little higher and brighter than the last.
Each step up the staircase is a new title earned only after the previous requirement is met.

FCCA

FCCA stands for Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. The experience stage is where many students lose time, so read how to log it in our guide to the ACCA practical experience requirement.

On a CV, write "ACCA" or "FCCA". In our view, the most damaging mistake is writing "CA" after an ACCA qualification.

What does the ACCA qualification involve behind the name?

It involves 13 exams in three levels, plus the ethics module and the work-experience requirement. ACCA's structure page sets out the exams:

LevelExams
Applied Knowledge (3)Business and Technology (BT), Financial Accounting (FA), Management Accounting (MA)
Applied Skills (6)Corporate and Business Law (LW), Taxation (TX), Financial Reporting (FR), Performance Management (PM), Financial Management (FM), Audit and Assurance (AA)
Strategic Professional (4)Strategic Business Reporting (SBR), Strategic Business Leader (SBL), plus two of Advanced Financial Management (AFM), Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA), Advanced Taxation (ATX), Advanced Performance Management (APM)

Exemptions cut the number of exams you sit, and ACCA's exemptions calculator shows what your own qualifications earn. If you hold the Indian CMA (Cost and Management Accountant) qualification, ICMAI (the Institute of Cost Accountants of India) and ACCA signed a memorandum of understanding on 9 August 2021, with an addendum on 7 October 2024. It gives mutual advanced entry through exemptions from the majority of papers.

What are ACCA pass rates in 2026?

Across ACCA's March, June and September 2026 sittings, pass rates for the 11 Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams reported in all three ranged from 39% to 55%. The average was 47.2% in March, 46.9% in June and 47.5% in September, and 47.2% across all 33 results. Those averages are our own calculation: we added the published pass rates for the 11 exams in each sitting and divided by 11 (and by 33 for the three sittings together). The averages are unweighted, so they ignore how many candidates sat each exam.

Sources: ACCA's March 2026, June 2026 and September 2026 results announcements. In March, 92,224 candidates entered and completed 103,785 exams. In June, 119,662 entered and completed 136,544. In September, 102,263 entered and completed 114,239.

The first-level and law exams appear in the June 2026 results only: BT 89%, FA 71%, MA 65% and LW 82%. Including these four, the average for June's 15 reported exams was 54.9% (823 ÷ 15, our calculation).

In our inference, with about half of attempts passing on the Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams, an average candidate should plan for several resits across 13 exams. Pass rates are per exam, not per student, so this is a planning guide, not a forecast. APM and AAA were among the lowest in every sitting. TX was the highest of the 11 in every sitting. Our paper-by-paper guide to how hard ACCA is shows which papers to space out.

Does ACCA charge different exam fees for India?

On ACCA's own site, the fees page set to India lists lower exam entry fees than the default page. As of November 2026, an Applied Skills exam shows £151 against £160 at standard entry. Standard entry for the December 2026 sitting closed on 2 November 2026, and late entry closes on 9 November 2026. The standard figures below are ACCA's standard-entry rates as listed for that sitting, and rates for the next open sitting may differ. ACCA lists all fees in pounds sterling, and the amounts below are ACCA's, not converted by us.

Exam entry (December 2026 sitting)[Default page](https://www.accaglobal.com/gb/en/qualifications/accountancy-career/fees/fees-charges.html), standard[India page](https://www.accaglobal.com/gb/en/qualifications/accountancy-career/fees/fees-charges-india.html?countrycode=India), standardDefault page, lateIndia page, late
Applied Skills exam£160£151£409£387
SBL£282£268£467£430
SBR£208£191£467£430
Each option exam£208£191£467£430

Late entry costs more than standard entry on both pages. Our model for the next open sitting, on the standard-entry rates above, for the four Strategic Professional entries (SBL, SBR and two options):

  • Default page: £282 + £208 + 2 × £208 = £906.
  • India page: £268 + £191 + 2 × £191 = £841.
  • Difference: £65, about 7.2% less. Both totals cover only those four exam entries.

As of November 2026, the annual student subscription for 2026 is £140 and the Ethics and Professional Skills module is £83 on both pages. ACCA's prices change, so check the live pages before you budget. To check yours, open ACCA's fees page, choose India from the location dropdown and compare each exam line to the default. For the full cost in rupees, see our ACCA fees guide. Coaching is a separate cost from ACCA's own charges; our coaching prices are in the section on how we coach ACCA students.

Frequently asked questions

FCCA is the designation of an ACCA fellow, short for Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. You earn it after five years of continuous ACCA membership and compliance with ACCA's continuing professional development policy. A lapse in membership restarts the five-year count when you rejoin.

ACCA says you can qualify in as little as three or four years if you work and study together. There is no time limit on Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills. After your first Strategic Professional pass, you have seven years to pass the remaining exams.

ACCA's entry rule is two A-Levels (UK pre-university subjects) and three GCSEs (UK school exams, typically taken at 16), or their equivalent, in five separate subjects including English and maths. See ACCA's page on who the qualification is for for the Foundation route.

You can skip up to nine, all within Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills. ACCA awards no exemptions for the four Strategic Professional exams, and each exemption carries a fee. For example, a Class 12 candidate typically earns none.
